In December 2019, Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer signed off on the Lawful Gaming Act, which allowed nearly every type of online gambling provider in the state to apply for a license. In-person betting has been permitted since March 2020.

Recent legal U.S. sports betting launches

North Carolina sports betting debuted on March 11, 2024, and marked the second legal sports betting launch of the year. The state is currently accepting registration at FanDuel, Caesars Sportsbook, DraftKings, bet365, and more. 

Vermont sports betting debuted on Jan. 11, 2024, with the introduction of three online sportsbooks — FanDuel, DraftKings, and Fanatics Sportsbook.

Another Northeast state came off the board when Maine sports betting kicked off on Nov. 3, 2023. Legal online sportsbooks will accompany several in-person betting options in ME.

Legal Kentucky sports betting arrived on Sept. 7, 2023, with the arrival of retail sportsbooks. The Bluegrass State gained access to online sports betting on Sept. 28, 2023.

After legalizing sports betting late in 2019, Michigan opened its first retail sportsbooks in March 2020. Today, Michiganders can wager with 11 mobile betting apps and visit more than 20 brick-and-mortar sportsbooks.

2024: Fanatics Sportsbook and Casino go live in the state.

2023: A sports betting partnership between Caesars Sportsbook and Michigan State University falls under scrutiny as staff and faculty urge the two parties to dissolve an $8.4 million deal. 

2022: Eagle Casino & Sports and SI Sportsbook go live in the Wolverine State. Michigan sportsbooks generate over $4.8 billion in sports betting handle in the year ending December 2022.

2021: Online sportsbooks in Michigan officially arrive, with DraftKings, FanDuel, and others launching online sports wagering platforms in the state in January. In its first year of legal online gambling, Michigan rakes in nearly $4 billion in sports bets.

2020: Greektown Casino-Hotel and MGM Grand Detroit accept Michigan's first legal sports bets. The two casinos launch retail sports betting facilities in March. The excitement is short-lived, however, as Michigan's casinos are forced to temporarily close at the onset of the coronavirus pandemic. 

2019: On Dec. 20, Gov. Gretchen Whitmer signs HB 4916 and HB 4308, among other bills, legalizing Michigan sports betting and daily fantasy sports contests. 

2018: The Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act (PASPA) is struck down as the Supreme Court lifts the federal sports betting ban. Each state may now legalize and regulate online and retail sports wagering.
