New York online casino updates

New York legalized off-track betting in 1970, then approved video lottery terminal gambling at racetracks in 2001 before racinos started to officially launch in 2004. Brick-and-mortar casinos were legalized in 2013, and sports betting became available — both in person and online — in 2022.

Online casino gambling is yet to follow suit, but Senator Joseph Addabbo, a longtime supporter of gambling expansion in New York, tabled his latest bid to launch legal online casinos statewide — Senate Bill S8185 — in January 2024.

Jan. 13, 2024: Legal NY online sportsbooks continue to provide for state coffers with over $1 billion in revenue taken in from the $22.7 billion wagered in 2024, and $2.6 billion in total revenue since online sports betting was legalized in 2022.

Jan 6, 2024: While New Yorkers wait patiently for online casinos to be legalize, 11 proposals for New York live casinos are currently under consideration.

May 7, 2024: Sen. Addabbo files a bill calling for online poker to be legalised in New York, although the legislation isn't attached to online casinos or any other form of gaming.

May 3, 2024: Las Vegas Sands is the latest US gaming operator to publicly criticize New York's brick-and-mortar casino licensing process, per the New York Post. The prolonged rollout has in part delayed iGaming legalization, online casino supporters have said.  

Apr. 17, 2024: New Yorkers will have access to the National Voluntary Self-Exclusion Program as early as summer of 2024, providing another problem gambling resource.

Apr. 10, 2024: One more potential Northeastern iGaming legalization candidate is positioned to see its hopes thwarted after the Maine House of Representatives rejected a bill. Rhode Island and Connecticut are two of seven states with legal iCasinos.

Mar. 16, 2024: The odds are growing longer for any U.S. state to pass a new iGaming bill in 2024, although Maryland is most likely to sanction online casinos next after HB 1319 moved passed the House and on to the Senate.

Mar. 7, 2024: iGaming legalization efforts in New York are in a "holding pattern" and may need help from the governor to proceed, according to Sen. Addabbo.

Mar. 6, 2024: Rush Street Interactive (RSI) CEO Richard Schwartz identifies New York, in addition to Illinois, Maryland, and Alberta in Canada, as one of the regions the company is monitoring closely for the future. Speaking in his opening statement on RSI's Q4 2023 earnings call, he said: "As we look ahead, these [markets] have us very excited about the future.”

Mar. 1, 2024: The New York Lottery ranks as North America's most profitable, providing $3.7 billion in state education funds over 2022/23.

Feb. 20, 2024: Over 700 casino workers sign an open letter protesting against online gambling in New York, citing fears that legalized online casinos could jeopardise their livelihoods.
