College football bettors have to give some serious credit to Virginia Tech Head Coach Justin Fuente. Just a couple of weeks ago, he was worried about his team being able to play because the roster was racked with players suffering from COVID-19. Yet here the Hokies are, sitting at 2-0 after wins against North Carolina State and Duke.

It’s been a year unlike any we have ever seen in football, but Fuente and many others have persevered, and now the Hokies will finish their run through the Research Triangle with an undefeated ACC match-up against the North Carolina Tar Heels.

Here are our best NCAA football picks and predictions for No. 18 Virginia Tech vs. No. 9 North Carolina. Kickoff is scheduled for 12:00 p.m. ET on Saturday, October 10 at Kenan Stadium.

Against the spread (ATS) pick

Virginia Tech's numbers on offense don’t necessarily blow you away—at least in the passing game. Quarterback Braxton Burmeister threw for 163 yards along with a touchdown and an interception in a 38-31 win versus the Blue Devils, but it’s the ground game where the Hokies like to go to work. Khalil Herbert carried the ball 20 times for 208 yards and two touchdowns, and they’ll lean on him against UNC. Defensively, the Hokies have some work to do after allowing 31 points and 410 yards of offense last Saturday.

It didn’t take Mack Brown long to turn things around (again) at North Carolina, but he was lucky to escape with a win at Boston College last week. Heels cornerback Trey Morrison intercepted a potential game-tying two-point conversation and returned it 99 yards for a score with 45 seconds to play, sealing the UNC victory.

The Heels need more production from stud quarterback Sam Howell, who put up pedestrian numbers against the Eagles, completing 14 of 26 passes for 225 yards and two touchdowns. Carolina’s balanced attack was aided by running back Michael Carter and his 121 yards.

Carolina played for the first time in three weeks against Boston College, which explains their sloppy play and nine penalties. I expect them to be better on Saturday, but the Hokies have simply found ways to win, and their seven sacks against Duke should put enough pressure on Howell to force a turnover or two and keep this game close.

PREDICTION: Virginia Tech +5.5 (-110)

Over/Under pick

Both of these teams can score points—the Hokies have dropped 83 points in two games while the Heels have tallied 57. I’m a little worried about rain in the forecast, but the Over is 4-0 in the Hokies’ last four games overall.

PREDICTION: Over 60.5 (-110)
