At first, I wasn’t sure about the whole concept of a “turnover chain.” It was probably the old man in me that yearned for the days of a player wearing a leather helmet, scoring a touchdown, deftly handing the football to an official and saying, “Here’s the pigskin, good sir!”

I’ve since come around.

College football betting fans know that the Miami Hurricanes have perfected the turnover chain, which now consists of Miami’s “U” logo overlaying the state of Florida, with the entire medallion jewel-encrusted, of course. The Canes have had plenty of reasons to flash their jewelry, too, as they’re off to a 3-0 start that includes embarrassing rival Florida State 52-10.

However, the real bling worth having is a trophy encrusted with the phrase, “National Champions,” and that currently belongs to the Clemson Tigers, who will host the upstart Hurricanes this weekend. Let’s have a look at our best NCAA football picks and predictions for No. 7 Miami at No. 1 Clemson on Saturday, October 10. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 ET.

The remnants of Tropical Storm Delta will be felt on Saturday night in Clemson, with partly cloudy skies and a high of 66. We could also see a few showers, with a 30 percent chance of rain and wind out of the north-northwest at 5 mph. Be sure to monitor the gametime conditions with our NCAA football weather info.

Against the spread (ATS) pick

The Hurricanes have lost their last two matchups against the Tigers by a combined score of 96-3, but this is not the same Miami team that got shut out by Louisiana Tech in last year’s Independence Bowl: the Canes have a Heisman Trophy candidate in QB D’Eriq King, who has thrown six touchdowns and no interceptions this season, while Miami is also averaging 5.85 yards per carry, led by RB Cam'Ron Harris. The Hurricanes are dangerous.

Games like this are nothing new for Clemson. QB (and Heisman favorite) Trevor Lawrence has been even more impressive than King this season, with 838 yards passing, eight touchdowns and zero interceptions. Travis Etienne does the damage for Clemson on the ground with 243 yards through two games.

Miami has had an extra week to prepare for this game, and its defense is ranked 12th in the country — creating six turnovers in three games. The Canes may not be on Clemson’s level yet, but they shouldn’t be more than two-touchdown underdogs, either.

PREDICTION: Miami +15 (-110)

Over/Under pick

For all the offensive firepower in this game, both the Tigers and Canes will roll out Top 20 defenses. The Under is 6-0 in Miami’s last six games as a road underdog, but bettors have already hammered the total down four points, making this bet not nearly as appealing as it was earlier in the week.

PREDICTION: Under 60.5 (-110)

Team total pick

The money pouring in on the Under is a strong indication that this won’t necessarily be the high-scoring affair we expect it to be. I believe the extra week for Miami’s defense to get ready for Clemson will be key, so here’s hoping the Canes don’t have to trade in their turnover chain for a charm bracelet.

PREDICTION: Clemson team total Under 40.5 (-120)
