2024 British Grand Prix 2024 Odds, Picks, & Predictions: More Bumps in the Road For Max

Max Verstappen couldn't pull out his first three-race win streak last week, so he'll look to the British GP to start fresh. 'Mad Max' has dropped to +215 following qualifying, so he's no sure bet ahead of Sunday's race at Silverstone.

Qualifying for tomorrow's 2024 British Grand Prix is in the books, and F1 odds now have Drivers Championship points leader Max Verstappen listed at +215 to begin a new winning streak.

British GP odds are tight at the top, with Lando Norris slightly favored ahead of his rival at +180. Can Norris and Verstappen keep their narrow edges on the leaderboard, or will they fly too close to the sun (and each other) once again, opening up the top to the rest of the grid as Formula One heads to Silverstone?

Let's dive in with the race scheduled for Sunday, July 7.

British Grand Prix 2024 pre-qualifying favorites

Max Verstappen and Lando Norris collided late in the Austrian GP, ending the latter's day while hampering the former's shot at winning. Verstappen finished fifth — just the third time in 11 races that he hasn't finished in the Top 2. But even if there was some bad luck and timing — plus some spite and ego — this is emblematic of his grip loosening even further. Verstappen finished first or second in all but one race in 2023.

George Russell won for the second time in his career and the first since the 2022 Sao Paulo Grand Prix. While the British GP sort of represents a homecoming for the 26-year-old Brit, he hasn't historically performed well at the race, with last year's fifth-place finish serving as his best result. His Mercedes teammate, and fellow Englishman, Lewis Hamilton has a decorated history at the race with eight victories (three more than the next closest drivers).

Verstappen won last year's, but that was just his third podium in nine tries. And with him winning less of a sure thing than it has been in some time, his odds are longer than usual.

Norris may have finished 20th in Austria after his collision with Verstappen, but he was the most serious contender in that race up to that point. He also finished second to Verstappen in Britain last year.

British Grand Prix pre-practice leans

Max Verstappen to win (-150 at DraftKings)

Max Verstappen and Lando Norris have been narrowly battling it out for months now, with Verstappen's three most recent wins coming by a combined seven seconds.

However, the two got a little too close physically in last weekend's Austrian Grand Prix, with Verstappen seemingly not giving Lando Norris enough room around a turn, which resulted in Verstappen dropping down the grid and Norris being forced to retire.

Verstappen has now failed to win three of his last six races, an in-season stretch he has not sustained since the middle of the 2022 season.

Intriguingly, the British Grand Prix has troubled Verstappen in the past. It wasn't until last year that he finally won his first, and that was preempted by a seventh-place finish in 2022, an early retirement in 2021, a fifth-place showing in 2019, and a 15th-place outing in 2018.

Verstappen has neither the recent form nor track history to justify odds these short, and any wager on him should come post-qualification if he fails to secure pole position.

Lean: Only bet post-qualification if Verstappen finishes outside pole position.

Lando Norris to win (+300 at BetRivers)

Known for his ability to improve or at least maintain his position from start to finish, Norris has ended back-to-back races in a worse position than his starting position — something he has not done since the early stages of last season.

Prior to the Spanish Grand Prix two races ago, Norris had been able to at least maintain his position in all but five of his previous 23 races.

Norris' history at this track is arguably better than Verstappen's, finishing 11th in his 2019 debut and following that up with fifth, fourth, and sixth place outings before as last year's runner-up performance.

Given his track record of getting things back on track and considering his arguably better body of work here compared to Verstappen, Norris is worth a pre-qualifying look on the board.

Lean: Bet prior to qualifying.

George Russell to win (+1,600 at DraftKings)

Last week's race was just Russell's second trip on the podium this season, a rather disappointing result given the excitement around him heading into last season after a podium-filled 2022.

Russell also doesn't have the best track record here, with last year's fifth-place finish being his only result inside the Top 10 across five races at Silverstone.

And quite frankly, the fact of the matter may be that Mercedes' engineering team has fallen too far behind the likes of Red Bull, McLaren, and Ferrari. One glance at the Constructors' Championship standings demonstrates this, as Mercedes still sits 72 points behind the Top 3, even after the chunk of points brought in by Russell's win last week.

Until we see more high-end consistency from Russell and his team, he is not worthy of a bet to win.

Lean: Stay away entirely.

British Grand Prix 2024 post-qualifying picks

Race prediction: Lando Norris to win (+220 at Caesars)

Norris is coming off back-to-back disappointing finishes and is due for a bounce-back performance. He was last year's runner-up at Silverstone and showed out during the first two rounds of free practice this year, further demonstrating his comfort on this track.

After being forced into early retirement last week and failing to convert pole position into a win in Barcelona, expect Norris to get his first win since Miami.

Best bet: Lewis Hamilton to podium (-120 at BetMGM)

While Hamilton may not be the dominant force that he was from 2014-2020, he still boasts a strong track record at the British Grand Prix in recent years.

2021 marked the start of his 'decline' (he finished second in the Drivers' standings for the first time in five years). However, even in that season, Hamilton managed to win the British Grand Prix from the second position.

In 2022, Hamilton reached the podium just nine times across 22 races. One of those podium finishes was at the British Grand Prix, where he climbed from fifth to third. He repeated a similar feat last year, climbing from seventh to third.

Hamilton has an undeniable comfort and knack for this race, and his qualifying performance on Saturday further reinforces that. Expect him to continue to find a way onto the podium come Sunday.

Understanding F1 betting odds

The most popular way to bet on Formula 1 odds is by simply picking the winner of a particular race. Other popular F1 betting options include which car/constructor will win and whether or not a particular race car driver will end up on the podium with a Top-3 finish.

F1 race odds usually look like this:

  • Sergio Perez +1,400

This means that on a $100 bet, you'll stand to profit $1,400 if Perez wins that particular race. If one driver is especially dominant, you might see a minus sign (-) ahead of that driver's odds like this:

  • Max Verstappen -120

This means that you would need to bet $120 to win $100 on Verstappen winning the race.
