Formula One returns to action with the Dutch Grand Prix following the long summer break, a break that came just as things got interesting. Max Verstappen has not won in four straight races, his longest such stretch since the 2020 season. The good news for Verstappen, however, is that he has won three straight at this track ever since its return in 2021.

Can Verstappen break his four-race loss streak or will pole sitter Lando Norris and the rest of the grid continue to block him from the top of the podium?

Dutch Grand Prix 2024 picks

Pre-practice leans

Max Verstappen to win (+180 at Caesars)

When Max Verstappen opened at +110 in the opening race of this season, we thought we would never see as long of odds ever again. At the time, it was largely a market being suppressed by optimism that a new season would bring some parity after Verstappen lost just three races in all of 2023.

But now after having lost four straight races and following the long summer break, Verstappen now opens at the longest odds he has opened at all year.

And those odds are very tempting. Verstappen is the only winner of this race since 1986, having won three straight races here since the event's return in 2021.

However, the drivers of Mercedes and Ferrari played spoiler for Verstappen in the four races prior to the break, just as Verstappen had seemingly turned things around with back-to-back wins in Canada and Spain.

But with a win this weekend, Verstappen can tie Jim Clark for the most wins at this track in history. And Verstappen tends to show out when history is on the line - take last year's race for example: It was his win here that tied him with Sebastian Vettel for the longest race win streak of all time at nine.

Verstappen's history here and his own pursuit of it should give him the edge, and at these odds, there is a lot of meat on the bones.

Lando Norris to win (+200 at FanDuel)

Norris enters the closing months of the season in second place in the Drivers' standings but is still 77 points behind Verstappen. Norris largely failed to capitalize on Verstappen's relatively poor showings, managing to reach the podium only twice during his four-race skid.

And the Dutch Grand Prix has not been kind to Norris either, as he sports two back-to-back seventh-place finishes and a tenth-place finish in his first appearance here.

Last year's showing was particularly bad given that it was his second-worst placement during the back half of last season in which he hit the podium in seven of the last 13 races.

Lean: Stay away entirely

George Russell to win (+1100 at DraftKings)

Russell has had quite the stretch as of late, winning the Austrian Grand Prix seemingly out of nowhere after having reached the podium just once all season prior to that.

He then followed that up with an early retirement in the British Grand Prix, and then placed a pedestrian eighth in the Hungarian Grand Prix but while posting the fastest lap.

And just when he had fallen off everyone's radars again, he crossed the finish line of the Belgian Grand Prix as the winner but was then disqualified for his car being under the minimum weight, giving the win to teammate Lewis Hamilton.

Russell's track history here is equally eclectic: he finished 17th last year but finished as the runner-up in 2022. And then he finished 17th again in 2021 after failing to finish the race.

It's not the most sound wager but the threat Russell has posed as of late makes him a worthy stab before qualification.

Dutch Grand Prix 2024 pre-qualifying favorites

The parity that we're seeing in Formula 1 over recent months has completely shifted the outlook for the rest of the season.

Max Verstappen is the top choice at Zandvoort — where he's won the last three years — but he's actually in a bit of a drought as he returns from summer break. He's gone winless over his last four races and has logged just one podium finish over that span. That's clearly reflected in the odds, with him fetching +165 odds just months after being a weekly -400 favorite.

Putting pressure on him atop the board is McLaren's Lando Norris (+175), who sits second in the season-long standings and has logged eight podium finishes through 14 races this season, including his first career victory in Miami back in May.

His teammate Oscar Piastri sits third on the board at +550 and has a win of his own this season (Hungarian GP) despite having half the podium finishes of his teammate. They've all come recently, though, and he's even putting pressure on Lando as the team's No. 1 driver (fourth in standings, 32 points behind Lando).

Dutch Grand Prix 2024 post-qualifying picks

Lando Norris to win (-134 at BetRivers)

Max Verstappen may be the winner of the last three Dutch Grand Prix since its return to the schedule, but he failed to demonstrate that level of comfort and dominance in Saturday's qualifying round.

Lando Norris not only bested him, but he also did it by a whopping three-tenths of a second. Making matters worse for Verstappen, Norris' teammate Oscar Piastri sits right behind him in third position.

This race is set up to be eerily similar to the Hungarian Grand Prix two races ago... but in the inverse. During that showcase, Piastri and Norris used their positioning to help stagger their stops and prevent Verstappen and the rest of the field from getting ahead of them.

The race ended with an intriguing conflict where, because race leader Piastri pitted later, McLaren heavily insisted that Norris — who was leading at the time due to McLaren's deliberate pit order — give up his lead to Piastri.

Through in-race communications, McLaren assured that if the positions had been reversed, Piastri would have been expected to do the same. After a few awkward laps of silence and light protest, Norris ultimately complied, allowing Piastri to secure the first win of his career.

We now have a perfect setup to see the same occur on Sunday, but in Norris' favor. And given his gap over Verstappen, that seems very likely.

Understanding F1 betting odds

The most popular way to bet on Formula 1 odds is by simply picking the winner of a particular race. Other popular F1 betting options include which car/constructor will win and whether or not a particular race car driver will end up on the podium with a Top-3 finish.

F1 race odds usually look like this:

  • Sergio Perez +1,400

This means that on a $100 bet, you'll stand to profit $1,400 if Perez wins that particular race. If one driver is especially dominant, you might see a minus sign (-) ahead of that driver's odds like this:

  • Max Verstappen -120

This means that you would need to bet $120 to win $100 on Verstappen winning the race.
