1) 10-25-1990......Beat Buster Douglas for WBC, WBA, IBF
2) 11-06-1993......Beat Riddick Bowe for WBA, IBF
3) 11-09-1996......Beat Mike Tyson for WBA
4) 8-12-2000........Beat John Ruiz for WBA
While I don't neccessarily agree with him being a 4 time legitimate Heavyweight Champion of the World, technically, according to boxing rules and guidelines, this would be his 5th heavyweight title..

I think he is speaking of the linear heavyweight championship which most boxing pundits refer to as the legitimate Heavyweight championship through history and in this case he is correct. You basically have to beat the man to be the man. In this case, Holyfield is truly a two time heavyweight champion in the eyes of many. He won the linear championship when he beat Douglas, lost to Bowe, got it back when he defeated Bowe in the rematch, then he lost it to Moorer and hasn't had it since.
In the past it has usually worked out where the title passed from generation to generation unscathed and many times this included the faded linear champ coming out of retirement to fight the upstart champion due to outside pressure (Johnson-Jeffries, Dempsey-Tunney and Ali-Holmes for example). In the case of Marciano, just like now with Lewis, the linear champion retired and didn't come back to pass the torch. So the title was declared vacant and Floyd Patterson and Archie Moore fought for the title as the top two contenders. Post Lennox Lewis we have not had this chance as the top 2 contenders according to Ring Magazine have not fought. The top 2 now are Klitschko and Peter. Even though they already fought, the fight occurred when they weren't in this position.
Passing of the Linear Championship since Holmes: Holmes to Spinks Spinks to Tyson Tyson to Douglas Douglas to Holyfield Holyfield to Bowe Bowe back to Holyfield Holyfield to Moorer Moorer to Foreman Foreman to Briggs Briggs to Lewis Lewis to Rahman Rahman back to Lewis Vacant since Lewis retirement
