ESPN has Taylor vs Lopez tomorrow night (Sat 6/10/23) and I bought two spots.
To win, in any sport, requires focus and discipline in both body and mind, but you can make the case that's it's even more so for boxing. In team sports, one player can have a bad day and his teammates can make up for it. In team sports, the offense can have a bad game but the defense can make up for it (and vice versa.) In boxing, a singular sport, it's all on you, baby. Lopez has always been a bit mental, and more so as his career advances. He confidence seems to have been replaced by bravado. Based on recent comments and action, his head does not appear to be in a good place, and that's a bad place for someone who is about to step into the ring.
One thing I look for in fighters is "quit", and despite his young age I sense a little of that in Lopez. Not "quit" as in he's old, or just looking for one more pay day, but "quit" as in uninterested, as in a lack of focus.
I rarely lay odds as high as these, and even rarer unless I firmly believe there's no chance one guy is gonna win, and I can't say that here as Lopez, at 18-1 with 13 KO's, can win this fight. I just don't think he will.
I'll buy Taylor at -190.
And just in case I'm correct in thinking Lopez is not fully prepared to fight tomorrow night, I'm grabbing a nice dog price on Un 10' rounds at +167. With a combined 26 KO's in 37 fights, even if I'm wrong about Lopez there's still a 70% chance at a KO. (To be sure, that 70% is kind of a funky stat because most of the KO's came against lesser opponents, but I like the chance of a Taylor KO and the odds.)
Buys:
Taylor -190 1 unit
Un 10' +167 for a half unit
