Can anyone post some light on why the different ring sizes ?

I watched the Cintron fight last night and it looked like they were fighting in a shoe box

Is this ring size decided at the signing and who has the final say?

I often wondered why this is an issue to be bargained for. It would seem standard ring size for all bouts. Anyone have a answer for another sport that plays with the field ?

Whoever runs the promotion of the fight card, remember being in Foxwoods for a fight card and the main event was between 2 jr.bantamweights and the ring was huge

  the reason why is because if your a boxer you want the biggest ring you can get, so you are able to use your footwork and boxing ability and it is the opposite for a brawler or puncher, they want a small ring, so it is much easier for them to track down their boxer opponent.  example david tua wants a small ring, willie pep a big one.   and to answer the second part of your question, in hockey the rink sizes are much bigger over seas than they are over here, they play a more finness game over their, so they want the bigger ice. at least that's how it used to be not so much any more, but the tradition of ice size has stuck,  and in baseball the field sizes are different as well.

mojo822: Bantamweights are very small men (they stand around 5'2" and weigh up to 115lbs). At a live fight the ring appears big (with smaller fighters) if you are sitting on floor seats within 15 rows back of the ring and having to look up. and the ref is also size matched with the fighters. They also find referees near the same heights or slightly smaller (for televised fights) than the fighters so they don't look like kids boxing. Ring sizes vary upon contracts in conjunction with state commissions, sanctioning body and a few other factors. The rings are between 16ft to 24ft.
The most commonly used are the ones that have an area of below 20 ft. The floor area must be padded by at least an inch of stretched canvass. The platform is usually three to four feet above the ground. The four ring posts measures about five feet from the platform. They must also be properly padded. The diameter of the ropes covering the boxing ring should not be less than one inch. Also, platform frames can be made wood or metal. The ropes must be evenly spaced. You can use turnbuckles or hooks to secure the ropes to the posts. The platform ring’s floor is required to be covered or padded with either vinyl or canvass.
Lastly, there is a required thickness for padding (you can check out the requirement from the rules committee). As far as why choose a certain ring size, thesoulpurpose has answered the basic premiseon this. It often becomes a major bargaining challenge more so because of the psychological impact as it can cause a fighter just enough doubt to his psyche, and therefore effect his rhythm.
An example of demands not just for fight strategy but psyche out your opponent was Leonard vs Hagler.
That Hagler's camp would accept Leonard's demands for a larger ring (20ft), shorter fight (12 rounds instead of 15) and larger, thumbless gloves (Reyes) still confounds me to this day. Marvelous Marvin was champion. He could have refused all of Ray's demands and still insisted on the lion's share of the purse. Normally you get a battle of demands, but Hagler agreed and turned the psyche game back to Leonard. Ray thought to himself that unless this guy is so positive he can beat me that easily, why would he agree to all my terms just like that.

in baseball only the fence depth and foul territory are different. line to line is the same in all fields. Ground rules are different also

mojo822:: I use to go to both Mohegan Sun and Foxwoods but then Mohegun shut down the poker room and I quit my constant appearances. I posted about Gatti vs Ward I at Mohegan Sun where I was begged by a friend who had ringside seats. but I was more interested in a wild poker game I was in, but I hesitantly went and you know how it went and I don't turn down any fights when I'm asked to go. I went to fight after fight and remember Berto got dropped for the first time in his career in round 6 at the City Center in Saratoga Springs.
For the Record: Berto's opponent that night was Cosme Rivera. On BoxRec it says he was 30-10-2-1 before he fought Berto. He looked much older than 31 and his ring sheet showed him with over 100 fights (more were losses). That's a big disparity and I assume they ask him on good faith his record as BoxRec needs a source or sanctioned body to count each bout. I just found that interesting and wanted to see if anyone else had a similar encounter.

sometimes whoever has the most leverage can decide. Like say someone wants to fight Pacquiao really badly sometimes they are willing to let him dictate how big the ring or how small the ring is. Of course guys that like to use the ring and move around and box like larger rings while brawlers like the ring to be smaller

LRM704: Actually I thought it was good question. It's rarely brought up, and usually only people in the boxing business know about it. Plus with all the different sanctioning bodies, different rules in each state, I've yet to see someone outside the boxing business inquire the ring size since the 80s. I trained fighters that have no clue about ring sizes and the rules and regulations.
