Really tough fight to analyze. Martinez at his best is a level above this kid. He has simply too much speed and skill and SHOULD make Chavez like very ordinary.
Still I can't invest heavily in an ageing fighter who
1) has not looked good in his past few fights... 2) who has a history of bad decisions going against him and 3) who is up against a boxing instution in Oscar De La Loya/Goldenboy and Julio's legendary father.
Something smells fishy here and I will be stunned if there is not some sort of contervorsey. Remember JCC versus sweet pea? I have a feeling Martinez will need to knockout Chavez to win this fight. Even if Martinez 'wins' via points, there is a strong chance considering the crowd and who is promotiong the fight that Chavez will get the decision.
I think people investing heavily in this fight considering the external factors are nuts. Play safe and hope for the big payoff at juicy prices..Martinez should win, but no way am I playing him..My plays will be..
Chavez via Decision @ +350 Draw @ +2500..

Not only that but the amount of $$$ to be made if JR wins is unfathomable, considering whats going down in Mexico right now and how hungry the Mexican fans are since Barrera retired and Oscar put on fish net.....

Ummm with all due respect.. Although he didn't beat them into retirement, I believe Martinez has indeed stopped his last four opponents. And aside from the first Williams fight and draw with Kermit, I don't think the judges have actually been a factor in his fights. However, you have just cause to be concearned with the external factors, after all, this is boxing, and this fight has plenty to be concearned about. Let me add something you didn't mention, and that is Chavez and Martinez will be fighting for the same title vacated by Martinez, the WBC title, when Martinez refused to face his mandatory, I believe. Now one thing I've learned about boxing is that once you snub one of the big alphabet orgs., they never forget, and they never hesitate to flex their puny muscles to reminde you of who rules boxing. Martinez, being fully aware of this, will again look to take matters into his own fists, but unfortunately, Chavez is too tough a nut to crack. So, I wouldn't surprised if Martinez wins the fight, but loses the decision. Accordingly, and if the juice wasn't so high, my bet would be Over 9.5. Draw is an interesting idea too.

Larry I see you point but Macklin and Barker in my eyes are B Level fighters. Add Andy Lee into that. Chavez has come one a lot and while I expect Martinez to have to a good start I think Chavez can wear him down in the later rounds and keep the fight close.
I don't think Martinez has the power to KO Chavez. Indeed if the KO comes I think it will be Julio via late stoppage. My hunch is that Martinez goes up early and Chavez comes on late and wins a contervorsial decision..

I think coventional wisdom says Martinez early; Chavez late. It's a likely outcome. Martinez does indeed have power, though, don't underestimate it. I'll point out his recent strecth of KOs, and especially note the multiple Knockdowns of Dzinzurik (spelling), a fighter that had NEVER been down before, and just went the distance with a fighter who was 12-0 with 12 KOs! I think there is something to be said of that. Nevertheless, this fight may just ride moreso on the chin of Chavez Jr. Literally. He is proud of his ability to take a punch, and I would expect him at some point to stand in the pocket and intentionially taste a hard straight left, just to answer for himself if he can take Martinez' best shot. The fight will begin soon thereafter. Thanks and good luck, your insight is appreciated.
