Over 9.5 -325, Under 9.5 +250 (The number has already dropped some on the under, I believe.)
I missed the Esalas fight, and actually haven't seen Stevie since the Harris mismatch, so I'm wondering how close to beyond a doubt "shot" he currently is. If Edner had a little more pop and a little more polish, I'd say the Under 9.5 (or even laying the 3-1 odds) would be a no brainer, but he doesn't. It's also only a ten rounder, and Stevie knows all the tricks of survival.
I don't think I can back a side here, but the number on that Under might be a value play. You guys thoughts?

under is worth a shot, but I can't have any reason to back johnston here. Seems very shot and past his prime. Just a couple more paychecks for him and he should be out the game. his prime moments came almost 8 years ago vs Jose Luis Castillo and those were a split decision loss and draw. Other then that and his knockout of sharmba mitchell which also was over 12 years ago hes pretty much on his way out.

Its a tough fight to break down because it is tough to gauge whether Johnston is shot or EXTREMELY shot. Cherry always shows up to fight so if Johnston still has anything left in the tank, I'd envision a competitive fight. If not, then Cherry will stop him. Ultimately, I just don't know and the only value I could find was a small play on the draw at 25-1.

I'm on Cherry inside for a bit, I think Johnston may be gone at this point.

Very, very strange fight. Cherry comes out with an "if I can't beat 'em, I'll join 'em" approach after getting schooled by Paulie, does a horrible Mayweather impression for nine rounds, then lands the 1-2 he could have hit at any point in the fight with :24 left.
Edner was just doing his job, and I'm glad your play hit FB, but I've got to say, I'm pissed right now at Stevie's corner for sending him out in the 10th, and pissed at Edner that he didn't just show some respect in the last round and let the old warrior survive. You don't shoot threes up 25 points, and you sure the hell don't endanger the health of a guy who clearly has nothing left in a sport as brutal as boxing. That was a very immature move.
The way that fight had played out, the KO at that point was completely unnecessary.

I disagree completely. Edner Cherry is not Stevie Johnston's corner or the referee. He is worried about his career and his job is to fight. To expect him to not hit him for an entire round is ridiculous. This is boxing, not basketball.
I agree that the fight should have been stopped no doubt. But Cherry is not to be blamed at all.

It's really disgusting that ESPN makes match ups like this simply because they don't have the budget to pay two decent fighters. This fight was clearly set up to be an execution, and there would be absolutely no reason to watch without cash on the line.

I correctly took some heat on another board for voicing that opinion.
Obviously I'm gaming on the outcomes of fights, but I'm also a fan of
the sport. As that fight wore on, it became clearer and clearer that
Stevie was shot and not even close to being competitive. When it wasn't
stopped after he was beaten around the ring in the ninth, I got
disgusted. And when it looked like he may have been seriously injured
by an afterthought punch with the fight all but over, I got angry and
lost perspective.
Edner Cherry is just a young guy trying to earn a living in a hard
sport. I was a fan of his before the fight, and after some clear
thinking, I'm still a fan of his now. I think more talented or wiser
fighters handle a mismatch like that in better fashion (i.e., stepping
up the pace to end matters early, landing the combination that forces
the stoppage, etc.), but you're absolutely right Hak, "blaming" a
fighter for being what he is, or for pressing for a win is ridiculous.
Bottom line, it's past time for Norwood and Johnston to hang them up.
They can't ply this trade any longer without endangering themselves.
