Dawson is a very good natural light heavyweight, and Hopkins is not. Hopkins is 160lbs, 168lbs, and maybe an even catch weight weight of 170lbs, but that's his maximum, he is not a natural light heavyweight. Hopkins can get away from fighter who don't have speed and power and they must have a jab. It's a matter of size, not age. All the talk about Dawson not being prepared is more hype. In all aspects, that was a shady way to finish for Hopkins but he would take that over a serious (possible KO) beating any day. Dawson was walking him down from the start and looked much bigger, stronger, faster and accurate. People talk about Hopkins faking,etc... He decided to continue the 8th round on against Echols in the rematch and he was way ahead, Echols would have needed a KO, or some serious knock-downs. B-Hops stopped him in the 10th. Shady promoters, managers, trainers and boxers and you have bad and shady refs and judges. I was glad McCain wanted a federal commission on boxing... AND THIS FIGHT, THE MAYWEATHER-ORTIZ FIGHT, etc... purses should be frozen and with-held for fighter who simply cheats in any ways as if not to continue. Start to seize entire PPV and pre-fight purse payouts for return and you will see fights.

hopkins is 100 percent lightheavyweight, the reason he did not look as strong as he has in the past at 175 is because of his age not the weight. not sure why you mention getting purses getting withheld, neither floyd or bernard did anything wrong, hopkins mri came back and he was not lying. I do have something special planned for my next fight though, I have always been a fan of razor ramon, so to finish off my opponent I have planned to perform the razors edge, you know pick him up over my head and slam him down on his own head, that way I will be able to get the TKO victory, it's a fucking joke, the ref blew the call, plain and simple, obviously a no contest, or bernard wins by DQ, It is true that it did not look good in the early going for bernard and it looked like he was most likely going to lose this one, but remember that bernard is a slow starter, so no one can say for sure, but to lose a bet because of a blown call by the ref, that fucking pisses me off, although I do believe that the dec will be overturned within the week. weather my sports book will honor it is another question as I have talked to them about it and they are not giving me any clear answers, just side stepping. time will tell

I have to disagree that Hopkins is not a natural light heavyweight. At 170lbs, I'd say he could fight with anyone. Also, as he got older and his metabolism slowed, like many boxers they gain weight. I spoke about purse money regarding the entire sport, not just the latest BS. How many good fighters already banked big paydays and slacked, but if they were broke and the purse was only winner take all... how many fights do you think would be much more entertaining. That's why I give credit to a guy like Mosley, fighters he was beating he fought the very last second when many would breeze the final round. An example was Ricardo Mayorga, got KOd the final of round 12 with no time left. I great rule that took many years to change. Why did they allow a fighter to be saved only in the final round by the bell (I know because their theory is a guy has 3 minutes to beat his opponents and no more... OK, then why did they allow a guy in early rounds not saved, or if he got up 6 seconds after the time... take 6 second off the next round to make it fair). Overall it was a change that needed because you only had 2:50 to win by KO in final round, unlike other rounds, a rule that I thought was TERRIBLE. It definitely should be called a no decision (Nevada calls it no contest) in California. The way it happened, while Hopkins leaned over the top of his back (could have cause Dawsons's back to give out, so Chad threw him with an extra authority to make a statement and not to injure Hopkins. I would say "No Decision", or an intentional foul that could cause serious damage (like the Ortiz headbutt). The difference was the outcome and timing and not the foul. Dawson reacted in a defensive move as he was being (possibly) illegally harmed. Mayweather was fine, and just clocked Ortiz while Ortiz was in LaLa Land! Hopkins has been known as a slow starter, even against Oscar, but lately people gave him credit for fast starts and taking control. Even during slow starts, he barely did anything and the other fighter just was more active and would win the round. The Dawson fight he was getting dominated. I stated that if he used his jab constantly it would be enough to keep Hopkins rhythm off. We all know that was a clear "No Decision" (No Contest)... and unlike a young fighter not wanting to ruin his career and continue and injure his arm, how many fights against top caliber does Hopkins have in him? Vitali Klitschko quit in 9th round with a bad shoulder and he had a huge lead and Byrd had no chance to KO him. Many people called him a baby, quitter, etc... He stated that he was young still and would return and fight a long career then cut it short damaging that shoulder more. I'm old school more orientated, where it's the Heavyweight Championship, you fight until the death. Joe Frazier said the money these guys get now should risk dying in the ring for millions they make (compare that to 20k paid soldier in peril daily in Iraq or Afghanistan-lol). I feel Vitali made the right call as he is extremely intelligent and now him and his brother dominate Heavyweight Division, and he only lost once more in a Heavyweight fight against Lewis due to cut as he was winning on all the cards. Fighters these days have to consider their future as a whole and not fight-per-fight. I gamble and claim it as a profession and people laugh when I don't bet fights that seem to have a large +EV. I'm looking to win consistently the most in the year, not break the world record in a week when I pick and choose smaller fights that are not well known but you can have a much bigger ROI. In final, I believe Hopkins lied about the fact he said he would continue if he knew he would lose by TKO and not a No Contest. That was pure BS. He dominated Echols and decided to continue another 4 rounds if need be before he was getting big paydays, and he stopped Echols in the 10th. That was a decade ago. In this scenario, almost everyone loses... the ref, commission, both fighters, people who bet (except Dawson), boxing's already bad reputation. The Mayweather fight I didn't care because Ortiz would have been hurt badly and he knew it so he stayed down. This fight could have been exciting because Dawson does have fading moments when he gets a little sloppy in the ring, but didn't appear distracted fight night. It would have been interesting to see if Hopkins could counter Dawson or figure out a way to win. Ortiz had nothing to figure out, he was behind in every category that favors a fighter.

lightheavy is the only place for hopkins right now, cutting weight at this age would only weaken him, coming in natural is the best call, that's what floyd and manny are doing, I would say that most of the time it's better, having a walking around weight that is no more than 5 to 10 lbs above your fighting weight. alot of these guys that walk around 30 and 40 lbs above their fighting weight and then try to cut the weight, they spend so much of their time in camp focused on losing weight as opposed to what they should be focused on, and that's their opponent and a game plan as well as the technicall aspect of the game. I actually think that boxing should go back to SAME DAY WEIGHT INS, that way people will actually fight in the weight classes that they belong in and won't try to cheat the system and in many cases hurt themselves in the process. we always hear about the fighter that comes in after the weight in 15 to 20 lbs heavier and they end up being too strong for their opponent, I would say that their is just as many if not more in which cutting the weight weakens them and their actually at a strength disadvantage coming in, the first fight that comes to my mind is morales vs barrera 3, morales killed himself to make the weight came in outweighing barrera by 11.5 lbs, barrera came in natural and was the much stronger fighter, this is the decision that my team and I have decieded to do, my walk around weight is about 4 to 5 lbs above my fighting weight, I could struggle down and get to the next lower weight class, but we experimented with it in the gym and I was not nearly as strong, I think same day weigh ins will make for much better fights as guys will in most cases always be at their strongest.

I agree about the age and weight change and the weigh-in should be same day. Ortiz was 164lbs (Floyd 150) and I tried explaining that this was a clear sign he had no shot. Gaining all that weight makes no sense for a strategy when fighting Mayweather. Basically it drains you up and your stamina and speed decline fast. At such an older age more than 32 or so, it is common because of natural metabolism. Ortiz was 24 years old and was 147lbs the prior to fight night, then adding 17lbs is a bad sign of management and training. I remember when fighters did it to gain a power edge and it made sense (like Michael Moorer did at light heavyweight and he was a beast, but stamina was a problem for him at light heavyweight (and heavyweight). He had 26 straight wins by KO(TKO), and only 2 were past the halfway mark. Ironic, his stamina seemed worse at heavyweight even though he had not weight limit (I credit his stamina at light heavyweight was better because he trained harder and had a proper diet, so even with draining he physically was prepared. My friend that started following boxing because of me and he saw Moorer at 175lbs, then 11 months later he called me and thought he was seeing things when they showed Moorer at 231lbs and fat (56lbs heavier in less than a year). My friend said he went from Julian Jackson to (post Tyson; against Evander 246lbs) Buster Douglas. He asked me if Moorer was taking ROIDS & T-BONE steaks day & night. Plus it's dangerous playing with large fluctuations of weight in a brutal sports for the fighter (dramatic weight from weigh-in) and to his opponent. Today many fighters we see fighting out of their weight zone is more for the big-money match-up fight.
