Tyson opened around 2-1 favorite. Odds moved slighty but many believers in Tyson thought he wanted revenge and would fight better (lol). The 1st fight was one of the most unprecedented odds fluctuation in sports. Tyson opened at 25-1, quickly it went down to 15-1, then another huge jump at 8-1, and ending 7/2 in some sportsbooks. I think the avergae overall was around 5-1. The odds dropped so fast come fight day. The sportsbook said with the dropping odds they were waiting for Tyson bettors, but they didn't show. One sportsbook said as the odds dropped more people bet Holyfield, and one sportsbook claimed they had no bets on Tyson. If knowledge serves, Lennox Lewis was the only fight Tyson was an underdog (I thought that fight was a christmas gift, and it was).

Barring Tyson's biting incident, Holyfield was a master at dirty fighting. Using headbutts, elbows and forearms. In the first fight against Tyson the headbutt was accidental but a major factor causing Tyson to be disoriented. Then rematch Holyfield notice in the tapes how he could recreate what was accidental before and make it intended. He noticed that during exchanges when they got close he would lower his head, but the rematch he lowered his head and brought it up in a lunging fashion and referee Mills Lane did a bad job in allowing Holyfield to intentional due this and not get warned. Watch the first fight and Tyson lunged with a big punch that missed and he felt into Holyfield who had moved out the way but the collision was accidental. Holyfield notice that making a few adjustment he could use it as a weapon. Holyfield I watched since his early days and classic fights at cruiserweight against Dwight Muhammad Qawi. He was a champion at his twelfth fight at his hometown.
On another note when we talked about 15 or 12 rounds, and brain damage you can add Evander to that list. He was paid $600,000 against Valuev, which is the lowest payday Evander ever received for a championship fight. The WBA did an investigation as many though Holyfield won the fight opposite to the judges giving Valuev a majority decision. A great heavyweight that almost every boxing fan loves to watch was fighting for the heavyweight title of a major and oldest sanctioning body (previously the NBA since 1921, then second was WBC in 1963) and got paid the lowest amount he ever received for a championship bout. Evander turns 50 years old next October. It's sad situation and reminds me of old time fighter who never got the paydays they deserved. Holyfield has the second all-time earner just over $500 million, and time after time we see athletes do the same, although maybe not in the amount. When he bought that palace that was just several feet smaller than the White House I wondered how long it would take for him be in debt.
Back to Evanders dirty ring tactics, he used the forearm when he cornered an opponent, he also did the fake miss but the elbow often struck opponents on the top of the shoulder. I'm not a person who had prejudice against very religious people but the one thing Holyfield claimed he was a devout Christian but had children with other women while married, I can't comment on the time he spends with his children but knowing his lifestyle it would be difficult to imagine he could financially support all 11 children (not sure his alimony, etc; he did receive a court statement as he was past due on child support). He supported Christian Evangelist with millions, even a $265,000 special prayer. Not considering his personal life, being a dirty ring fighter I wonder if that's against Christian beliefs of fair honest play.

Hindsight is 20/20, you have to remember the fight opened at 25-1 for a reason, he got beat by Riddick Bowe (twice, could have been 3 if not for fan man) and Michael Moorer. Also, Holyfield fought a fat, out of shape Buster Douglas (Buster was favorite, if Tyson fought that Douglas it wouldn't have went a round), Bert Cooper had him in alot of trouble, went 12 rds with Alex Stewart (Tyson had 1st rd KO) and Ray Mercer knocked him down. The funny thing is Don King only fought Holyfield because he looked shot. Tyson wasn't ready to fight him at that time (fresh out of prison, fought push-overs), he needed more rounds against good competition, he should have fought Bowe instead anyways since he just KO'd Holyfield, but I guess a win over Bobby Czyz (former 160lb fighter) gets you a Heavyweight title shot. Holyfield could have fought Tyson in the 80's (could have been a great fight) but stayed at cruiserweight and waited til Tyson self-destructed (he knew when he first signed to fight Tyson in 1990, that his life was a mess). Holyfield used his head to win anyways, so his win is tainted.
Too bad they didn't fight in 88, before he fired Kevin Rooney, Tyson wins hands down.
