Sadly Rich boxing is becoming more and more of a business. I mean look at David Haye. He does a remarkable job of selling a fight with Audley Harrison. A guy thats been exposed at domestic level, who wasn't ranked in the top 10 of ANY boxing organisation yet makes 5 million (sterling at least!) of out a fight he had no chance of losing. When Haye orgiinally signed to fight Klitscko it was all for the hype. He never had any intention of actually fighting Wlad. He was getting a crap deal and when his backers Setanta went bust, he all of a sudden gets a back injury.
Himself and Adam Booth then do a rethink after pulling out of the second Klitscko fight. They seal the Valuev fight (which made huge money in the UK) and then he fights Ruiz and Harrison. 2 guys he easily beat and made alot of money doing it. Now all of a sudden he is negotiating 50/50 with Wlad (before he wanted more, because of UK television money). Why? because he knows Wlad is the only fight left for him. There are no other fights that are easy that he can make big money on, so he adds extra pressure on Wlad and says he will retire this year. Wlad will bite and the fight will be made.
The point I am making is this. Win or lose against Wlad and Haye has made as much money as he possibly could out of boxing. Yet who has he fought!?? He has made millions from fighting bums instead of testing himself against guys like Adamek, Chambers, Arreola etc etc. Haye like a lot of boxers is a businessman first and fighter second. We the public are the idiots that keep lining these frauds pockets. Haye will have made over 20 million from boxing by the time he is done and he will probaboly have had to had 2 hard fights (Tony Thompson and Wlad, although an argument can be made for the Mormeck fight)..
You then look at Pacquaio. He will have fought 3 Floyd victims (De LaHoya, Hatton and Mosley) after Floyd fought them and after these fighters are miles past their sell by dates. I mean if Pacquaio can make 25 million for fighting Mosley a fight he can't lose, why take a more dangerous fight for less money (Berto, Bradley etc)???Or why fight against Floyd for 15 million more when you can beat guys like Margerito, Mosley, Cotto. Clottley and make more money, with less risk to your legacy. The problem is not Roach or Arum Rich. The problem is the boxing public who when they see this fights anounced are digusted, only to fall for the hype of a bad Pacquaio training camp in 24/7 and have the promoters convince them this is a competeive fight buy it (which they do), when in reality the fight will not be in any competitive. Manny, Roach and Arum then laugh all the way to the bank.
As for Floyd it's clear he is having some sort of breakdown. There is a chance he could be going to jail. Having said that for a guy that hasn't fought in nearly a year he is doing a great job of keeping himself in the news. Expect Floyd to fight a safety first fight in Decemeber against a washed up guy and then announce his retirement in 2012. His heart isn't in the fight game anymore...
The bottom line is that Floyd and Manny would have been the biggest fight of our generation, yet because boxing being a business and the public falling for con after con, bad matchup after bad matchup, both these guys will retire without ever facing their biggest challenge and we (the boxing public) are the fools that fell for the propaganda and spin of various promoters...
It leaves me with a sour taste in the mouth...Let's hope the new generation of fighters like Gamboa, Lopez, Khan, Bradley will not hide behind promoters and finally give the fans with they truly deserve. Here is hoping. Let's hope for more boxers like Martinez, Glen Johnson, Carl Froch and less of the Haye's, Mayweathers and Pacquaio's (Ward and Bute could be the new frauds, fight at home on their terms against weak opponents). Its fighters and promoters like these that are ruining the sport we love...
Happy new year to you all...
