In 1992. poker introduced IRC poker forum and play to the very few online. Then when newsgroups gained popularity before the online BOOM, in 1995 rec.gambling.poker was officially formed. It was not a moderated forum and very helpful with information, connections, etc... it was an outlet that wasn't previously provided.
For people assuming it had limited users and information was far from incorrect. Almost every user provided valuable resources that are now available at a click on thousands of sites. There was no spam, no people posting false information purposely, etc... Besides later on the poker site 2+2 (by Mason Malmuth who owned a publishing company for gambling and mainly poker books by him and David Sklansky), RGP was still the best resource as 2+2 had a particular following and it was moderated. The problem is an bad reference to his books or authors was deleted so that early on was a deterrent and turn-off to many.
The boxing newsgroup never caught fire and I assume it exists but google used the original platform and boxing was rec.sports.boxing abbrn for recreations.sports.boxing. For example they had Froch by decision, Ward by knockout, etc... none which I thought were likely possibilities barring some rare instance.
I use to have and run HSPIC and CSIC... High Stakes Poker Inner Circle in 2003 and Combat Sports Inner Circle. I did not moderate but only allowed credential or referrals to enter, or new requests under 90 day probational period so they weren't spammers, etc.. I realize and utilize other sites more intricate with boxing but it's a sport I rarely find any information I don't have or considered. The MMA information as so many fighters and leagues it is very hard to keep track and have watched the fights, so it is a nice resource as it tells if the fight shows anything worth viewing (not action necessarily, cause limited action is valuable as it shows a defensive ability of an opponent to shut-down another fighter).
Covers boxing seems it had 40% consistent posters (whether accurate or not they provide an honest analysis), then 40% that either are clueless or try stimulating problems with false info and accusations, and another 20% constantly come and go or change usernames.
As a former forum creator and moderator, the one advantage a moderated forum does is get rid of the junk, and not make new members feel not welcomed or that this site has nothing to offer. I have been a user nearly a decade as it was one of the first well done sites. Two others existed (I won't state under Covers regulations) at the time before sites popped-up all over.
A statistical pay service I did use was Statfox FoxSheets that provided great material I ran through self-made handicapping software. Obviously it only worked on certain sports with significant amount of data that could be used to gain an advantage. Only two sports worked and extremely well... NBA totals and NCAA hoops conference play. After it ran and eliminated many toss-ups or accurate lines, I subjectively handicapped.
