I was reading a boxing magazine a while back and it said that 90% of rematches are won by the winner of the first fight, does anyone have stats to back this up, would be a very profitable system if true.

That seems like something pulled out of the air by the writer.  I can't imagine that it's anywhere close to that number.

Thats not even close I could name ten fights off the top of my head where the winner of the first fight didnt win the second

Not sure where you'd find accurate numbers for this question, but you might try emailing Graham Houston.  He loves questions like these and if anyone would know, it would probably be him.

The most recent rematch, I think, was Malinaggi/Diaz.

actually most rematches and I can't give a percentage are won by the original winner is a quicker time...

Holyfield/Lewis I

Castillo/Corrales I

Morales/Pacquiao I

Morales/Barrera I

Ruiz/Holyfield I

All these fights the winner of the first fight didnt win the second and these are just off the top of my head.I figured most rematches are won by the other guy ,I mean there has to be a reason for a rematch no one gets their ass kicked and says "lets do it again" unless they think they'll win the second time

 

Maybe I'm wrong though

What I find is on rematches, the better COUNTER PUNCHER usually wins, I don't know where they came up with 90 % but good always to take a look at the fighter who is a counter puncher he has better odds of winning.

I also think it would be smart to look how the first fight went, was it a lucky punch? What division?

I can think of 2 rematches from the same fighter ... Lennox Lewis.. he lost to McCall and Rahman and defeated them both in the rematch...

I don't buy the 90 %!

noo..manny didn't win against morales on their first fight.. i disagree with 90%
