By Frank Car: So, I am not going to laden this with F-bombs, but I am going to say this. As all of you probably know Floyd Mayweather Jr released a video — which he took himself and picked out a portion of his liking to show — of him apparently trying to get the Mayweather – Manny Pacquiao bout made. So without further ado… Hey, Mayweather, how [expletive] dumb do you think the fans are? Seriously.
Several years ago I wrote an article on this same site entitled ‘Mayweather vs Pacquaio “[expletive] You!” -Your Fans’.
Echo. Echo.
Now first of all, the camera angle on that video Mayweather released (Youtube link) seems like it’s totally legit. I mean, Pacquiao I’m sure was aware he was being recorded. I hope you’re catching my sarcasm because I’m laying it on pretty thick. Now Pacquiao maybe was aware, but could it get anymore shady then recording a video from a camera sitting on someones lap (which is where it appears to be)? Then a 10 second excerpt is taken out of what was said to be a one hour discussion, looped and posted. Really? You want to let the people know you are trying to get the fight made? #MAKE–THE–FIGHT.
I all but dare Mayweather to not make this fight. He and his partner Showtime are going to reap the full wrath of the fans. While Miguel Cotto (with Cotto doing as well as he has been) would be an intriguing match-up with Mayweather, it wouldn’t matter, the ‘boycott-ur-crywolf’ will be in full effect with some boxing fans. In fact, the one entity that should want to make this happen, is Showtime. They have to recoup from Mayweather costs (200+mil), and if this match doesn’t happen, watch how hard the Pay-Per-View numbers get hit for his remaining two matches with them, which have already been declining. Test it. I dare you.
Pacquiao’s side, which is including his promotional company Top Rank, may lose boxing fans as well. Pacquiao is just guilty by association.
Oh and then there is Mayweather’s shameless plug of his app, which name I will not even mention.
Give the fans what they want? No.
Promote anything Mayweather? Yes.
Mayweather will never be known as the greatest ever, TBE (the best ever), or whatever other names he wants to tag himself with, without fighting Pacquiao, in my view. He will be known as someone who was their own biggest fan, constantly dodging a boxer named Pacquiao, TTT (that’s the truth).
I think of a story which I believe was in the commentary of Top Gun. A few fighter pilots were discussing (real pilots) on how pilots get their nick names, and these pilots were quick to point out how one guy named himself Shark, or Great White or something ferocious like that, and guess what name everyone else ended up calling him?. Minnow. Guess what name wound up on his helmet. Minnow. Point being, you don’t get to name yourself and or point out your accolades. Others and time itself will do that for you. And any type of bravado your going to put off, will be flipped because it’s easily seen that that’s who you want to be seen as, not who you are.
If he fights Pacquiao, defeats him, or god forbid knocks him out, he can talk all he wants because he walked the walk.
So Mayweather, don’t make this fight. Continue to display that you are trying to make this fight. Continue to slap the supporting fans — who have supported you through as you always point out, your 17 year or whatever reign at the top — right in the face. And when the smoke clears, try and have as many excuses ready as possible for decades to come as to why it never happened. You’ll need ‘em.
This video Mayweather released shows me, if anything, all he cares about is not looking like he is dodging Pacquiao. I don’t care what he is able to edit, take out of context, or show people a one-sided story with. Fight Pacquiao or forever live that decision. Yes, I didn’t say live with that decision, I said live that decision.
SIDE THOUGHT: Or maybe Mayweather released this video so you could see him saying “We have to make this fight,” and shortly he will be announcing that is in fact made, thus making it look like he is the one who got it done after all. One of the said stipulations is that he wanted to be the one to announce the fight was made and that was agreed upon by Pacquiao’s camp. Either way it’s a win-win in his mind. Because if it doesn’t get done it’s. Hey, I tried, see? And if it does get done it’s… was all me. See? How can you argue with that. #Justgetitdone
Whatever you do, don’t think some spliced out video for 10 seconds that you yourself put together to show everyone is going to clear you of all wrong doing. You really think people are that dumb? As Larry Merchant once said, “Not this Cowboy.”
