LOS ANGELES (AFP) - Apparently, former world champions Fernando Vargas and Ricardo Mayorga can't wait to get into the ring on September 8.
A press conference to announce their bout at Staples Center degenerated into a brawl on Wednesday as Mayorga's trash talking goaded Vargas into action.
When Nicaragua's Mayorga said he was going to do VargasÂs family a favor by forcing him into retirement, specifically mentioning Vargas's wife, Vargas snapped.
"I will do Vargas a favor by retiring him in this fight so his family doesnÂt have to suffer every time he steps in the ring," Mayorga said. "IÂm going to do your wife a favor and not let her cry anymore after I disfigure you."
"You donÂt talk about my wife," shouted Vargas, who leapt up and landed several blows that left Mayorga with a slightly cut left eye and bloody lip.
Vargas, a onetime International Boxing Federation 154-pound champion, had said before the press conference that he was retiring from the ring but wanted to go out a winner.
He last fought on July 15, 2006, when he was stopped by fellow Californian Shane Mosley in the sixth round.
"I didnÂt want to go out like that," said Vargas, who has a record of 26-4 with 22 knockouts but says he has had problems making weight. September's bout will be at 162 pounds rather than the super welterweight limit of 154.
"I fight for pride and I fight for family."
Mayorga, who boasts a record of 27-6-1 with 22 knockouts, has been idle since May 6 2006, when Oscar De La Hoya knocked him out in the sixth round to seize the World Boxing Council super welterweight title.
