James McGirt, Jr. vs. Raymond Joval McGirt (+120) (Bodog) 1 unit
Mike Alvarado vs. Cesar Bazan Under 9.5 (+185) (Bodog) 1 unit
I'm locking these in now because the line's on both have been dropping since opening. McGirt's now -120 at 5dimes, while the Alvarado under is at even money. I'll be back tomorrow with an explanation on both.

James McGirt, Jr. vs. Raymond Joval McGirt (+120) (Bodog) 1 unit
McGirt was winning his last fight against Carlos De Leon, Jr., before getting KO'd in the 7th due to some careless defense. That shouldn't be as much of an issue in this one, as Joval isn't a power puncher, and McGirt's moving down from 168 to 160, which should be a better fighting weight for him. Also, Joval has been pretty inactive (last fight was October 2007), and he's two months shy of his 40th birthday. Given the difference in age, I can see McGirt being able to keep up a higher workrate than Joval, and the fight's in McGirt's backyard (New York), so a close decision should go to the local fighter.
Mike Alvarado vs. Cesar Bazan Under 9.5 (+185) (Bodog) 1 unit
Alvarado has a very tight defense, so he should be able pick off almost anything that the forward-moving, aging Bazan throws at him. Against Michel Rosales in Alvarado's last fight, Alvarado waited to unleash a full-scale attack until Rosales had tired himself out from throwing too many ineffective punches. I expect Alvarado to let Bazan bring the action to him in the early rounds, and then begin to take over with counter combos. The accumulation of punishment should lead to a stoppage sometime in the mid-rounds.It's true that Bazan has only been stopped by elite fighters (Miguel Cotto and Jose Luis Castillo), but both of those occurred over five years ago, and Bazan has deteriorated since. He hasn't fought anyone of Alvarado's caliber lately, and Alvarado's on the path towards becoming a champion in the light welter division.

Jesus Soto Karass vs. David Estrada Under 9.5 (+200) (5Dimes) .25 unit
This should be a war for as long as it lasts. Soto Karass has gone the distance in his last three fights against ordinary competition, but apparently he'd been worn down from his sparring sessions with Antonio Margarito, and he didn't spar with Margarito leading up to this fight. That could mean that he's fresher tonight. Also, Estrada could be on his last fighting legs after taking countless shots from powerful Andre Berto last year, so he may not be able to take the barrage of punches that are sure to come from Soto Karass. Then again, Estrada has only lost to elite contenders, and he may be able to hurt someone who's a step below those guys. Also, regarding Soto Karass, sometimes fighters make excuses for past lackluster performances when the truth is that they're just not as good as the hype. If Soto Karass leaves himself open the way he did in his last three fights, I could see Estrada taking him out. So, in a wide open fight, I'm taking the + money on it ending early. There should be plenty of offense in this one.

Correction: The Total is 11.5, not 9.5. At Bodog and Sportsbook, it's under 9.5 (+275), but I took the 11.5 (+200) because I can see the possibility of the fight ending in the later rounds, and I don't want to get moosed just because of greed for the bit of extra juice.

you beat me to the punch weepaul. I was going to post my writeup on that one later, but I might as well go ahead and post the play. Flores isn't very good. If Diaz can't beat him, he needs to go back to retirement. I have a feeling that Diaz's people know that Flores is the right guy to come back against.
Antonio Diaz vs. Felix Flores Diaz +135 (Bodog) 0.5 unit

Hopefully a lot of you caught this absolute barn burner of a fight! What a war. I had the fight dead even at the time of stoppage (3 rounds to each, with a 7th round draw), before Soto-Karass unloaded a massive combo culminating with a gargantuan right to end it in the 8th. The big Mexico - Puerto Rico weekend is fully underway with Mexico ahead 1-0.

James McGirt, Jr. vs. Raymond Joval McGirt (+120) 1.2 units
Two 3rd round knockdowns put this one in the bag for McGirt Jr. Joval came on strong and I have to disagree with the 2 judges who scored a shutout for McGirt, but there's no doubt about it that the better man won. This was a classic case of strategic matchmaking, as Joval simply doesn't have enough power to land he kind of big shots he would have needed to do tonight flip the script in a fight like this where he was way down on the scorecards early on. On top of that, we all know the old saying, follow the money. Here's a textbook example of following the money to the bank. McGirt opened as a dog and ended up a -150 fave at some books. In boxing, perhaps more than in practically any other sport, that's usually a red flag that sound alarm bells with line watchers.

Antonio Diaz vs. Felix Flores Diaz +135 0.675 unit
If you're a fan of action, this was the fight to watch tonight. Both men had their moments, but Diaz prevailed via a hard fought decision win. Flores started out strong in the first, but Diaz unloaded a series of devastating uppercuts in the middle rounds, laying the groundwork for a strong points win. The fight was more or less decided in the last few rounds, where Diaz, who seemed like he was tiring in the 8th and 9th rounds, fought back like a warrior and managed to outwork his opponent when it counted the most. One judge had it a draw and in all honesty, I wouldn't have been shocked with that result, although Diaz looked superior in the 11th and 12th rounds. This was a fine comeback win for Diaz, who showed no signs of ring rust whatsoever. Where he goes from here remains to be seen.

Diaz wins a majority decision in a fight that could have gone either way.
I had Flores ahead until Diaz dug deep in the final 2 rounds.
Nice night for you Bud.
