Why I Hate Floyd Mayweather

No one appreciates Floyd's skills more then me. He is the most naturally gifted boxer of his generation, a boxing genuis. There is a BIG reason why he is not appreciated. The problem I have and alot of fight fans have is that Floyd his whole career has avoided all the big challenges. He is like the owner of a Ferrari thats never taken the car out of 3rd gear because he is afraid of what might happen if he does! Why we should appreciate a fighter that has ducked every major challenge thats been out in front of him. When Miguel Cotto was in his prime Mayweather ould not fight him. He was then offered 8 million to fight Margerito and turned it down to fight Carlos Baldomir. He takes the Hatton fight like he has taken all his fights in the past few years. I can beat this guy easy and make alot of money doing it. He then does the same with a past it, over weight, sluggish Juan Manuel Marquez. I felt sorry for Marquez he is so much better then he showed against Mayweather. I wonder what would have happened 6 years ago at 135? Back then Marquez would have been a BIGGER threat but that would have been way to risky for our Floyd .

This is NOT what inspires people! Appreciate Floyd! Do me a favour. No, I will appreciate Manny Pacquaio. A man thats fought and beaten legends and never ducked a challenge in his life. He beat Cotto, Morales, Barrera. He did it entertaining us along the way. Now I have no problems with Floyd's style. I appreciate the art of hit and not being hit. The problem I have is that the Welterweight division is full of talent and Mayweather has done everything he can to avoid the big names. Pacquaio, Mosley, Williams, Clotley, Cotto, Berto. The sad thing is bar Paul Williams I believe Floyd beats those figters. But yet most of these fights won't happen and why! Because Floyd says boxing is a business.

I never saw Sugar Ray Leonard use the excuse. I never saw Roberto Duran use that excuse. I never saw Tommy Hearns use that excuse. These legendary Welterweights never backed away from the challenge. They gave the fans the fights they wanted to see, because each one of those fighters believed they were the best. With Floyd he won't take on the big challenges and he uses the excuse that he is the pay per view king and that these such fights don't make business sense. What a load of tripe! Floyd is what is wrong with boxing. He is a conman. He is in it for the money. He is a disgrace to boxing. The world is a greedy place. The real boxing heros are the people that take fights for less money (its not as if they are on the bread line!) so that 1) They want to challenge themselves against the best 2) Give the boxing fans what they want. People are turning off boxing because of people like Floyd. If they come back to boxing it will be because of people like Manny Pacquaio..

I can 100% agree with you on FMM's career path and fight decisions, but I don't necessarily agree with you on the appreciation of MP. At 125 & 130, MP fought and beat all the legends. That fact I cannot deny!!!!   But after those weight classes, he, F. Roach and B. Arum have cherry picked opponents and leap frogged off of name recognition.  David Daiz ( a B- fighter with what noteable fights?????), Oscar De La Hoya (HOF fighter..... who fought at a catch weight (145 lbs) that he has not be close to that weight since 2000 [ 146.5 ....vs Shane Mosley] or 1997 [ 140.... vs M. Gonzalez], Ricky Hatton (who was exposed by FMM as a B fighter and later outclassed by Juan Lazcano {who???}) and Miguel Cotto (Who as Teddy Atlas and several other noteable boxing experts said was "shot". The AM fight, the Joshua C. fight and the entire Family ( Uncle and his marriage drama) and the catch weight...... left this guy a shell of himself.  I give MP alot of respect as a " A" fighter but "IF YOU DON'T THINK THAT TEAM MP IS CHERRY PICKING AND USING THE DAVID VERSUS GOLIATH THEME maximize their earning potential ........ then you are being fooled.

Team FMM and Team MP are using the different stratgies to accomplish the same goals....... FMM has been using them longer than MP but the public perception is skewed away from the true underlying fact.

Check both fighters records over their last 5 or 6 fights and name 1 fight versus a fighter in their prime (1 fight....... MP vs JMM). These guys are "A" fighters and their TEAMs are marketing them well.  MP's fights are higher risk than FMM but not by much.

Look at the MP and FMM opponents previous fights and you will see fighters in decline.

Its all about public preceived perception and TEAM MP and TEAM FMM are skewing our perception to maximaize their profit...........Different stratgy same ending GOAL.

I agree with almost all of this post. I STILL don't like Manny and STILL believe he is the most over-rated, overnight sensation in boxing history. Maybe I'll have to lose betting against him a 4th time against Floyd....

I don't understand why Floyd gets this "ducking" label and Manny gets a pass when they fought THE EXACT SAME FIGHTS OVER THE LAST FEW YEARS!!!!!

Since early 2008, Manny has fought JMM, Diaz, DLH, Hatton, Cotto. Floyds last five have been Judah, Baldomir, DLH, Hatton, JMM. Pretty even comparison and one can even say Floyd got to the better common opponents first. However, the Cotto win was the largest win for either fighter.

The truth is that they took the same exact path to where they are at. Floyd took the road first. To hear all this talk about Manny is better than Ali, Sugar Ray Robinson, etc. makes me physically ill. It is the dumbest logic and the most bullshit I've hear in boxing in my lifetime. It's disgusting.

Floyd is the best boxer in 20+ years of the sport and it doesn't matter. He really can't win no matter what he does.

No tears from my eyes though. He did it to himself with his villain character he created to help sell the DLH and Hatton fights. It sold the fights but rubbed everyone the wrong way. Too bad we don't hear more about how good of a person he actually is to everyone that has met him or spent significant time around him. If we did, maybe we wouldn't hear about Manny being better than Ali.

Final thought: Manny is in the top 20 all time P4P in my list, but not above 15. Any reasonable boxing fan should agree with as much.

I disagree completely with you guys except for the fact I too Believe Floyd is better then Manny. Floyd ducks challenges. That is a Fact. Manny fighting Oscar was a FAR bigger risk then Floyd doing it as Manny is a good bit naturally the smaller man! If you remember Oscar was a heavy favourite for the Pacman fight. Also Manny fought legends at 135 and Below! You can't compare Manny fighting JMM at his peak and natural weight compared to floyd fighting JMM clearly past it and bloated at 147!!!

The difference is if Mayweather and Pacman doesn't happen, he will take on Shane Mosley. Mayweather will not. Pacman to be honest should never fight above 140 except for Floyd. He is giving away such an advantage. He achivements are incredible when you consider he started at 106. I guarentee you Pacman would never duck anyone at 140 no matter who they were! Sadly there are not that many big names at 140 right now. Can you say the same about Floyd? Which legimate Welterweights has Floyd fought? Hatton (who has has 2 fights at the weight!!!!) JMM (14 more then he has ever fought before!!!!). Baldomir (The guy that beat a past it Gatti!!!please do me a favour) Judah who has always lost the big fights!. Why didn't Floyd fight Cotto when Cotto was at his peak?! Paul Williams??Margerito? There were offers made, yet Floyd dodged and ducked like the coward he is.

I stated bar Paul Williams, Floyd beats the rest but he won't challenge himself!

I agree Walktheline that Manny is in my top 20 p4p all time but not high up top 20. Too many legends. I would have Leonard, Duran, Hearns quite a bit ahead of him.

MP has never fought a legend at 135 lbs.......That's a fact! 130lbs and below.....3 fighters are legends.

RISK: Oscar fought FMM @154 lbs...... who was his trainer, who is quoted as saying that his primary fighter could beat Oscar??????

Bob Arum and Team MP are in the business of Boxing and when you are trying to maximize earnings..... you do RISK Assessment

Oscar was low risk for MP.

1) Catch weight 145 lbs....... Oscar hadn't been that small since 1997

2) Age and inactivity....... Still has the skills but against a younger, well trained "A" fighter

3) His trainer was your trainer........ I know your weaknesses.

I agree that FMM has ducked fighters..........But if you look hard at MP's record (excluding MB, EM, and JMM)......... TEAM MP has cherry picked from 135 lbs up.........

Finally, I  agree that FMM would beat all fighters from 140lbs to 154 lbs (except PW)...... I even think he could steal a belt at 160 lbs.

I don't think that fight: MP vs FMM would be an exciting fight because:

1) Style:  FMM does not take risk.... he is defensive  fighter and a counterpuncher.

2) MP has to be disciplined to fight FMM and expect to win. F. Roach will train MP to be disciplined

3) Risk vs Reward?

a) FMM wants 50 million.........a narrow victory...... and second big payday....... so he does not have to fight PW, SM or JC.

b) MP wants the status..... but the only fights left for him are SM or JMM part 3.

Finally,  I think FMM wins the bout........116 to 112 or 115 to 113.  FMM will fight defensive and not be agressive. FMM will try to get MP to pressure him and FMM will score on counter punching. MP will be frustrated with FMM non agressive defensive and will lose the fight because FMM was able to score off of MP agression. 

FMM will hype up the fight, Freddie Roach And Bob Arum will hype up MP...........3 million PPV ......... contract will have SECOND BOUT CLAUSE IN THE FINE PRINT.........can you say Cowboy Stadium

its kind of ironic dont you think that you said TEAM MP has cherry picked fights from 135 UP? So when MP fights from heavier weight classes than what he usually is, he is cherry picking? I dont think fighting CHAMPIONS from heavier weight classes than he usually is, is considered cherry picking. Remember he was just the challenger,ex: DIAZ, HATTON, COTTO. Cherry picking is when you challenge a smaller fighter, builds him up as credible, then weighs in 2lbs heavier and brags about it afterwards saying it was just playing with a kid so and so.

Marny, the great Welterweights like Duran, Leonard, Hagler. They lost fights but there legacy will always remain. When your great losing is not a problem. They never backed down and they fought the best of the best. For Floyd to be mentioned in the same breath as these guys he has to fight Pacquaio, Mosley and maybe Williams. I Think maybe Williams is unfair as the guy is a freak at 147. I could see Williams fight at 175 one day as he gets older and weight gets put on naturally. I predict Williams will fight the winner of the super 6 and thats at 168.

I once said Mayweather Pacman will never happen. I think I am wrong. I think Floyd has known all along what he is doing. I think he came back to fight Pacquaio. Pacmans star is so high now Floyd can take the fight knowing he will probably win and make a truck load of money while doing so. He will then 'retire' again with "nothing more to prove" and "his legacy in tact" (not in my eyes mind you). He doesn't want Mosley and he certainly doesnt want Williams).

Cherry picking for Team MP has nothing to do with "heavier" weight classes!!!!  It has everything to do with fighting lower level of competition. David D. (overachieving "B" fighter), Hatton (over rated "B" fighter), Oscar ( HOF past his prime and fighting at a weight, he has not fought at since 1997/2000) and Cotto (a "B +" fighter who is shot from AM fight). Here are examples (to your point)  RRJ fought John R. for the HW title (cherry picking)....he did not fight Chris B. or Lennox for their titles..... why??? B-Hop sat at 160 lbs for years........was he waiting for the WT and Jr. WT to move up beause the Super Mids and LT Heavy had plenty of challenges.......(I think he was cherry picking). FMM has cherry picked since moving up from 135 lbs...... for several reasons!!!!!! 

Team MP fought 1 fight at 135 lbs (Diaz was not the best at 135 lbs) but it was a name and a good pay day. Team MP fought 1 fight at 140 lbs ( he was not the best but it was a great pay day). Team MP fought 2 fights at 145 lbs ( 147 lbs) with contractual restrictions ( Oscar is a great name but....... weight, age and inactivity...... super pay day) Cotto....... name but he is a shot fighter...... (Thank AM and and his uncle for that).

Team MP has cherry picked for the utimate goal ........FMM and the 50 million dollar pay day.

i agree! once that L blemishes his record, everytime he speaks people would just ask him to shut up. he can no longer brag about his defense, his being the best, being undefeated etc. people like to see a villain beat badly, and he is one of them. once he loses, people will no longer feel the urge to watch because he no longer what he builds himself up to be.

Okay, I understand that cherry picking for you is fighting in lower level competitions, I agree. But here is my question to you, have you seen a man weighing 106 lbs? My sister even weighs heavier than Manny when he started in boxing. He was not even a natural lightwieght, light welter, and obviously welterwight so fighting under these weights could not be considered low level competitions. I brought this up because it is kind of unfair to a man who has challenged as I said before, CHAMPIONS, in their natural weights to be branded as a cherry picking fighter.

One more thing, dont you guys even think that David Diaz looked like a non- Champion because Manny Pacquiao's dominance made him look like one during the fight. It's not that David Diaz lacked 50% of his skills that day compared with his previous fights, its just that he was fighting Manny. Same with Oscar, he was not supposed to retire that day, Oscars skills was not 50% less, It just that he was fighting Manny and his dominance made him retire. Yes Oscar looked old, its because Manny is too fast! Another one? Hatton, come on, a champion from a heavier weight class did train hard, in fact he was training with loud mouth mayeather, do you think those egos would let a Filipino guy beat them in 2 rounds and with one punch? Its not that he had a different style, its the same style he had when he got the belt, its just that again, he was fighting Manny. And same with Cotto whom I have a lot of respect. All of those excuses that they are old, not the same, low level competitors are BS. The real reason one retired, one looked like a non champion, one looked like a non boxer is that MANNY MADE THEM LOOK LIKE ONE and not because of anything else.
