I&#x27;m not surprised one bit actually.  That team is so poorly coached and has no discipline.  They have the talent, but have no direction.

agreed 100%. just look at the way hazell plays. the guy is a scoring machine but he takes 7-10 AWFUL shots per game. gonzo brought in troubled recruits also, remember keon lawrence driving drunk the wrong way on the nj turnpike? now more bad news is about to break about robert mitchell who was booted from the team last week. herb pope punching a guy in the balls last night didnt help either

He has a reputation as being a top flight recruiter. He has made strides in each year at the Hall. 19 wins this year in the best conference in college basketball. Seton Hall should be so lucky. This isn't Kentucky or Kansas here.

Bobby Gonz lost control of his team, and the players lost respect for him, and it showed on the court...From what I&#x27;ve read, he didn&#x27;t put enough effort into the program

Like i said, this wasnt all about on court results. in one week this program flipped upside down with issues. reports are also coming out that he didnt sign the contract extension that was reported in september, so the hall is only on the hook for a small amount of money

I have to respectfully disagree Webba. The only reason that I even started this thread was because I was impressed with the run that the Hall made. On Feb. 6th the Pirates sat at 12-9. In the last 10 games.....they went 7-3. In all 10 games they faced competition from the Big East. At 12-9 I didn&#x27;t think that there was a remote possibility that the term bubble would be associated with this bunch. To finish at 19-12 is heading in the right direction. The finish proves to me that the players were still on board.

Doesn&#x27;t EVERY scoring machine take bad shots? Isn&#x27;t that part of their makeup? Isn&#x27;t that mentality exactly what makes them scoring machines to begin with?

Seton Hal&#x27;s run at the end of the year was more a result of scheduling than actual improvement.  Their conference schedule was so front-loaded that they were bound to make a run late against the likes of Depaul, Rutgers, Providence, etc.  Also, as blue-n-orange noted above, the problem was is off the court antics.  They had four transfers on the team.  Blue went over most of this already- You all saw the Pope nut shot yesterday, which could be excused but he also has a troubled past, Blue referenced Lawrence driving drunk the wrong way down the Parkway, and by all accounts the news coming out on Mitchell (who just got removed from the team), is going to be really, really, really bad.  None of the three recruits they have for next year have qualified, which fits a clear pattern with Gonzo, and he is pretty much hated by the press, other coaches, and some of his own players.

I agree that the scheduling was beneficial.. BUT you still have to WIN the games. I now see that there were off court issues that I was not aware of. I have no argument for that. Nor do I disagree with the decision. I was initially surprised because I felt that Seton Hall was progressing under Gonzalez..........on the court.

A lot of people said the things in this article are what did it. The fact they didn't make the tourney, didn't save his neck either.

My problem with this will be, if they didn't have the next guy in line already. St.Johns spot open as well, some bigger guys might like to say "we have games in the garden". I think Hall is still the better job, but we will see.

I also on a small side note think his recruiting wasn't really what they would look for. Seton Hall Prep, one of the better programs in Jersey, let alone know nationally, always had at least 1 guy on there. Toney- El, Nutter, etc the past couple of yrs. They are not the bigger programs (ST.Anthonys, St.Pats, St.Bennie) cause they don't take kids from NYC like Pats, they play in the State rules unlike Bennies and they actually have to go to class unlike Hurleys kids in St.Anthonys.

He didn't even recruit 1. SOme went to Hard and Yale, others too good like Gibbs to Pitt, but that really told me something. Different Characters for sure

[/Quote]I am originally from Jersey City......so I agree with you. I would favor the Seton Hall job. But we are certainly in the minority. Most....if not all.....would rather be at ST. John&#x27;s.

Depaul is looking for a new coach.Bobby G.is supposed to be a good recruiter.I think he could do wonders recruiting the Chicagoland area.

Not sure about people wanting to be at St. John&#x27;s. When I saw a bunch of NYC players during the Big East tourney that was something I asked... Why they didn&#x27;t stay in the city and go to places like St. John&#x27;sIt was pretty resounding that St. John&#x27;s sucked and the location was awful. The campus and facilities they just did not want to stay in the city. They said they would rather go to Rutgers or Seton Hall if they wanted to stay by NYC. That really surprised me. If NYC kids look down on St. John&#x27;s its going to be tough to bring that program back to what it once was.

He will certainly get another job. DePaul could do worse. They continue to prove that. I think that it is a little unrealistic to think that he resurfaces immediately in the Big East...............but stranger things have happened.

Maybe it&#x27;s my age........I am 39. Growing up in Jersey City.....St. John&#x27;s was it. It was the Mecca. Playing in the Garden. Basically....hosting the Big East tournament. I have been away from the area for almost 15 years. Sentiments may have changed. But I have a feeling that if ST. John&#x27;s became relevant again...... Maybe I am just missing my youth. Who knows.

St. John&#x27;s can no longer use "The Garden" as a selling point over other BE schools. Every BE school will play atleast once in the Garden every year.St. John&#x27;s really needs to put money into their program and facilities and change the culture. I heard rumors that Mark Jackson has stopped donating money to the program and wants to become the head coach when Norm is let go. He is not happy with what has happened to the program and wants to bring it back to respectability. If he did become the coach I think he would be able to get top/better players. The BE is not the same with St. John&#x27;s struggling for as long as they have.

I was thinking that Mark Jackson would be the perfect choice. He personifies NY/St. Johns basketball. He was a candidate for the Knick job. He would be A PERFECT fit.
