FORDHAM @ ST. JOHN'S
I am 2-0 on the Red Storm this year(last 2 games) Initially I was seeing the zig zag as backing the Johnies here ats. But I took a step back when Point Guard Marcus LoVett was downgraded from questionable to doubtful. This is game where they could really use their starting point.
He missed their last game where they won but did not cover vs Cal State Northridge. They put up only 76 points against them who have the 334th ranked adjDef according to KP.
Against Tulane, who have the 265th rated D, they dropped 95 with Marcus LoVett. They hit a ridiculous amount of 3 pointers in that game. Surprisingly, they continues the 3 pointer onslaught in their next contest vs Northridge...
The Red Storm (4-5) recorded 85.5 points per game in the last two contests with four players averaging double-figures. As a team, the Johnnies shot better from distance than inside the 3-point arc as they nailed 26 threes and shot 56.5 percent from downtown.
Can they do it again? The percentage that they fall back to earth is increasing.
Fordham is 90th in hoops at defending the tre, 6.5 per game. Nothing breath taking. They allow 33.3% from the arc, pretty average. But what they are good at is stealing and opponent turnovers.
They are 3rd in hoops with 11.9 steals per game. Joseph Chartouney is 2nd in hoops with 3.63 steals per game. He missed their last game vs Harvard, today he is probable.
• Fordham has recorded double digit steal totals in eight of the nine games this year
• The Rams are also second in the NCAA in both turnovers forced (20.78/game) and turnover margin (8.2).
The Rams are the 2nd best team in hoops at opponent effective possession ratio, right behind Press Virginia.
The Rams are #1 in hoops in opponent field goal attempts per game.
Do you really want to be up against that with out your starting point? They got the victory vs Northridge(#318 D) with out him, but against Fordahm(#112 D) I see a whole different ball game.
To beat Fordham you have to bang inside and own the glass(that's where they are weak) They do go small a lot. But I just see the Johnies sticking w/ their guard play and will try to keep draining tre's. Why wouldn't they? It's worked insanely well the last 2 games. Let's remember that is a low percentage shot, I don't care who you are.
The Rams will be ready on D. Think the coach isn't game planning for perimeter defense after those last 2 showings?
On the flip side, Mullin can't gameplan for the Rams pressures and turn over ball. You can try but it hits you in the face once you are on the court. That's why almost every team that faces a full court press gets smoked by it...
-Fordham has lost 3 in a row, the Johnies have won 2 in a row. You know where the public money is...
