I have been waiting to write this report for about a week now and am all fired up for this game.......
Here is a look at the Scary and not so Scary aspects of the Rebels and their MWC opponents......
Some things to consider as Jimmer and his teammates approach ...
¦
Scary for MWC opponents: The Rebels rank second in scoring defense and
field-goal defense. They lead the conference with an average of 8.9
steals and can control games on the perimeter with a rotation of guards
and wings that are unrivaled across the league. When they are active for
40 minutes defensively, the Rebels are conference championship-type
good.
¦ Scary for UNLV: There is a good chance the post trio of
Brice Massamba, Quintrell Thomas and Carlos Lopez all will have fouled
out three minutes into any game against San Diego State. Massamba and
Thomas might have two fouls each during pregame layups.
UNLV is an
average rebounding team at best on most nights and often below average
when it comes to what its frontcourt offers at either end.
Do you remember the matchup issues UNLV had against the Aztecs last year? Nothing thus far insinuates it could be any different.
¦
Scary for MWC opponents: Despite a few recent games that suggest
otherwise, UNLV still ranks as the league's second-best shooting team to
San Diego State. The Rebels will be in any game they make shots and
don't embrace a bad habit of settling for 3-pointers.
¦ Scary for
UNLV: Anthony Marshall continues to think of himself as a jump shooter.
Marshall as a sophomore could have a nice impact in league if he plays
to his athletic strength by creating chances or drawing fouls off the
dribble.
¦ Scary for MWC opponents: The Rebels force about 4.5
turnovers more than they commit, which translates to more possessions
and opportunities to score. They also share the ball well enough to rank
third among league teams in assists and are athletic enough to rank
third in blocks. All good things. All important factors in winning.
BYU is led by Jimmer Fredette and by all indications he is a very good player. He does not play well here in Vegas and is considered a straight Bitch!! Jim boy went to the free throw line over 250 times last year and hit on 222 of them. He will not get the calls here and the Cougars will crumble against the Rebel pressure D it happens every year here at the T and M, the Rebels home court.
I would not hesitate to lay up to -5 on this game!!!!!
UNLV -3.5

Good write-up. i'll be at this game. Our defense is what the general public does not recognize. We are a lockdown defense that is tough to break. I may be biased a little but I say Rebels by 9 is the call here.

Always love the UNLV write-ups, but the best player on the court IMO is Fredette. There's no telling when this kid will go off, ala Arizona last year. He's a streaky shooter. Last years game in Vegas was decided by 4pts, a game in which the Reb's shot 55% to BYU's 39% and had more attempts from the line. That game just on paper should have been a 10pt game...the fact it wasn't would worry me as UNLV's weaknesses last year (Rebounding & Free-Throw %) are the same this year.
The key to me like you said is UNLV's pressure defense, the problem...if Fredette & Company are in attack mode...they'll be in the bonus early.
This line is spot on IMO, but I'm a value player and my play will be on BYU ML...however I will wait for ya'll to drive me value higher.

Thanks for your comments. I was at that game last year we jumped out to a big FH lead. Willis scored about 20 points and we let the lead slip away. I like Bando realize this a better team than last year and we have a more balanced attack not have to rely on Willis to carry the load. Rebels also have more weapons to throw at Jimmer defensively. Cougars are a cut of the head kind of team. They have a better inside game but this game will be played on the perimeter and at the foul line. The line has gone up to 4 may go to 5 by game time. This game is our NY-BOS here in Vegas so I think we still cover the number!!!

were you just addressing SDSU because you were going back-n-forth between long term and tonight, or did you mistype?
I like UNLV to win tonight, but I can't fade Jimmer against a press cuz if BYU breaks it then that means he will have some open shots and he is deadly. Jackson Emery is no slouch, either.
Can't wait to watch this one, though

The Scary reflections were written by our local columnist. I have said before in my reports that I am not a journalist. My thoughts are at the top and bottom of the post. I am just a garden variety gambler with a few thoughts on the Rebels!

Here is a bit more info on Jim boy at the Thomas and Mack.....
Fredette, whose 24.1 points per game average ranks third in the nation this season, is 1-4 against UNLV in the last two years as the ringleader for BYU, while the program hasn't beaten the Rebels in Las Vegas since 2005.
In those five games, he's averaged just 18 points per outing, shooting 32.4 percent from the floor, 33.3 percent from deep and has recorded 15 assists compared to 14 turnovers.
As always, UNLV will use a group effort against Fredette, rotating several defenders on him. The most high-profile match-up, though, will be between Fredette and Rebels senior Tre'Von Willis, who has proven to be kryptonite of sorts for the Cougars star in the last two years.
"He's a strong player, strong guard. He's pretty quick and knows how to play defense well within their scheme," Fredette said. "He gets up in you and is able to press you a little bit. He's just a solid defender, and he knows how to cut off angles well, play good defense, be long.
I see us frustrating the Cougars and cutting off the head!!!

Jim boy you had a great game!!! One observation and I hope the rest of the Rebels realize this! Anthony Marshall is the BEST all around player on this team and if egos are set aside they can do well. See you guys Sat for the TCU game!!

They will continue to struggle against teams that can rebound. They will always kill themselves from the charity stripe as well. 2 things egos can't fix. Both put up a shit ton of points 2nd half

Most my reports on the Rebels is very realistic and I do not always say that they will cover early in the year I lost a lot of bets cause I underestimated their wins. I know this team and being a homer I did put BYU+4 in a parlay with Vancouver and Air force to win some money.
