The big matchup between DeJuan Blair and Hasheem Thabeet tonight got me thinking...who's the Player of the Year so far in college hoops?
We're a month away from March Madness and although many guys have taken a shot to prove their worth, the race for POY seems to be wide-open. If you consider just statistics, then Blake Griffin would obviously be the favorite. But Player of the Year is much more then that.
First of all, you need some competition, which the Big 12 has none of. You need to be on a team in the spotlight so much that EVERY time a team beats you at home their fans storm the floor, you need to have experience and a history of making clutch shots, you need to be in the best conference in College Hoops, and you need to have the all-around game to take over at any point.
Off that criteria my choice for Player of the Year is Gerald Henderson. Not only for what he's accomplished so far but for what's going to happen over the next month. Remember that every team has slumps at some point. Griffin, Blair, Thabeet, Ty Lawson and even Jeff Teague can make an argument, but in the end we'll be talking about Henderson.
My question is, who ya got? (And no Willie Warren isn't on the ballot)
By the way, UConn (-3 at Sports Interaction) is the biggest non-Duke lock of the year bet tonight.
