Oh God, where to begin. What a sad day for UH Athletics. There's been accusations of this sort of thing for a while now, especially this season, but usually you just attribute it to guys who lost their take betting on games.
No offense to Hawaii bettors, but a lot of them here are sort of stupid when it comes to betting UH games. It's basically bet UH and the over no matter what, and before the game people bet more because it's the last game of the day, they've been drinking whatever it is. This strategy worked more or less for many of the past years because Hawaii has been an improving program and it took a while for the totals to adjust to their offense as well, this season though it's been the opposite and people can't seem to jump off their old ways.
Bottom line, if you're betting on hawaii every week, it's degenerate gambling more likely than smart gambling.
On to the scandal, I posted earlier this year when someone brought up Moniz and point shaving my opinions. I have a friend who swore this happened during Jones' tenure but only for a few games, I'd call BS but he went 6-0 on those games over what was I think a 3 year span. I believe Rolo (Hawaii's current O Coordinator) was also the QB those years. So there's that, and truthfully I could rationalize that happening to some point, Hawaii was good, they probably could build a lead then shave some off and still win the ball game back then.
This year though? Man this team is just not a great football team. They have all the writings of an average team who makes a lot of mistakes. People bring up the UNLV game, and there are legitimate points to be made there I can see, but Hawaii didn't look like the better team at any point in that game, and it's pretty tough to justify laying over 20 for Hawaii on the road in almost any game, in my opinion smart money was on UNLV there. Same with the NMSU game, NMSU is so much better this year than in previous years and the line didn't reflect that AT ALL, again smart money on NMSU.
There were some sick games, Idaho for example I don't even want to relive that one. I don't know how I feel about people saying blocked kicks are part of the point shaving, I feel like it would be a little difficult and stupid to plan a "Blocked" pat attempt, why not just fumble the snap or something if thats the case?
Moniz name comes up all the time, honestly I don't think he's a good football player he's a backup and he's done some nice things here but he's not the future and no where near the caliber of some of our other QB's. This scandal probably has some truth to it unfortunately (even though it sounds sketch as hell, anonymous letter? hpd investigating?) I hope the NCAA comes here because I can't see HPD being very reliable here.
It's a sad day, I hope it's untrue for the programs sake, but if it is true time to drop some bombs, all the coaches need to be fired and any players involved need to be expelled in my opinion.
Those are my thoughts

Players on the Hawaii team called the FBI and Police this time around, those not in on it. We will see, but dont be surprise if Moniz is not facing some serious federal charges went the investigation ends

If he's guilty he deserves it, but we'll see what comes out :/

Moniz isn't a good football player. His supporting cast members make him look like a star. Just like "Choke" Brennan, he had an AWESOME supporting cast. ANY QB would look good in the offense Hawaii runs.

I would like to see Hawaii play Leilehua, Kahuku, or Punahou. Maybe, just maybe Hawaii will have a chance to win but either way the score would probably be close!!!! LOL!!!!

One source of vindication for Moniz would be the Washington game where he led the Warriors to a last minute backdoor cover TD to cut UW's lead from 12 to 6, with the pending xp to make it a 5-point lead and thus cover all lines for Hawai'i, since I believe, the line opened at 7 and was bet down to 5.5 by kickoff. Of course, the xp was blocked and returned for 2, giving Washington an 8-point lead.
If Moniz was involved in shaving points, he would've thrown an interception on that TD drive which would've essentially ended the game. And if you believe he had some other teammates deliberately get that xp blocked and returned for 2, I can only assume you look strapping in that tin foil fedora.
This is not to absolve the Warriors of some shenanigans. I'm aware of the Cosa Nostra-like elements on the islands, something I've known about since the time they tried to kill Greg Brady because they knew he would shake up the world of competitive surfing, where they actively fixed the results. Of course, they made it look like his near-fatal injury was a surfing accident and blamed a cursed tiki idol, but that was all bullshit.
Anyway, I'm sure many, many players have been approached by goons, asking said players to shave points, but really, the QB has the ultimate control. If a left tackle allows four sacks in multiple games, he's pretty much finished and a backup will take his place.
One more thing, and this is to echo what others have said. Hawai'i is really, really horrible this year. I think they only had 3 returning starters on offense and Hawai'i is not a program that can reload. Such a shame because I love the islanders' passion for football, but those facilities, from all accounts, are turd motels. Even the Sugar Bowl trip didn't infuse the program with the money it desperately needed. Or I forget, the university spent the money in other areas. I'm sure someone will set me straight.

Yeah facilities are a joke compared to big like SEC and PAC-10 schools, but look at the money that comes in. Yeah we had the one BCS year which helped a lot but revenue just can't compete with those larger conferences. It's amazing Boise has done what they have in conference.

"Choke" Brennan? Dude that 12-0 season was amazing, Brennan brought Hawaii back multiple times including the amazing Purdue and Washington games. What tape were you watching.
Don't even mention Brennan and Moniz in the same sentence seriously, off the field Brennan was a class act, on the field he was a fierce competitor. Down three scores Moniz kind of like sulks around just sits looks content like whatever, Brennan in the same situation got fired up, he threw up, he cried, he had passion, they aren't even in the same sentence.
Anybody could have done well in the offense? Maybe if you're taking about yards and touchdowns sure but look at what Colt did in accuracy, in efficiency he led the nation, it's a shame he never got a legit shot in the pros because if he left in his Junior year he was projected to go 2nd at the highest probably 4th round at the lowest, instead the Georgia game killed his draft stock.
Supporting receivers were great, defense was ok, line was HORRENDOUS save maybe Satele at C. No offense to you man but just think your comment is oversimplified and just plain wrong.
Peace

1. You don't have to shave in EVERY game to make money.
2. Why do it in a big game like that, why not the little unknown games?
3. Competing strongly in the first two game (UW, Colorado) set everything up PERFECTLY for the UNLV BIG payout (Moniz FUMBLED a bunch of times)
4. As a QB, you don't have to throw INTs to shave. You can miss passes. Fumble. Not convert 3rd downs. MANY MANY other things, not just INTs.

From Hawaii, Also should look into alot of programs also. There is to much money being wagered on sports to not have this come up. Look at the Ohio/ Miami Ohio game the 1st they played good defense the second half I thought yjey were playing touch football, don't understsnd how you do a reverse 180? Look around alot of funny going ons.

UH just plain out sucks. They are such a predictable team when they play.Especially when it comes to second half they always go downhill.People in Hawaii bet on them because we have faith in them that they will have the heart to play better but they've been riding with a flat tire for awhile.

Another scandal out there. Apparently an ex-player and an assistant involving UC Riv and USD basketball. Broke out just a few days ago. It's goin on folks. NCAA is asleep at the wheel, so is the FBI.

Okay I am born and raised in Hawaii. I went to school in Seattle and just moved back to Hawaii little over a month ago. I have friends that played and our still playing currently on the Hawaii team. And last year there were rumors that some guys on the team were shaving points. So this goes back all the way to last season. Also it is known in Hawaii that Bryant Moniz's brother is also associated with being part of a local house in Hawaii.. I guarantee you that this information will never come out.
