I grew up in the Syracuse area loving the orange my entire life!
Been living in Las Vegas since 2002 now and have followed a mostly dismal and inconsistent SU team ever since, while also following our local UNLV Rebels program over the years. UNLV playing in a much weaker conference top to bottom has typically been thin trying to recruit mid level talent into a program with a coaching carousel and not much stability.
But something has shifted here in Las Vegas with Head Coach Barry Odom and his OC Brennan Marion. It's undeniable, the culture, the energy, the work ethic and the play on the field...these kids believe, and are proving it with focus and execution that seems to get noticeably better every week. The Kansas game was the proof for the defense...make it an ugly game, keep it close anyway you can and you'll have an opportunity to win in the 4th qtr...they did. (see "Andy Reid game play theory") The circumstances 2 weeks ago with Matthew Sluka leaving the program, after a 3-0 start was a huge gut punch...but this team chewed that sh*t up, spit it out, and answered the bell with a vengeance last week and somehow played laser focused and absolutely boat raced Fresno State. The talent on this team is legit.
Syracuse had the bye week before the Stanford game and I don't think the time off served them well at all. They came out so flat and lacked crisp timing most of the Stanford game....I love Kyle McCord's start to the year...love his story and the chip on his shoulder coming over from Ohio State, and it's clear that he's got a pro arm...BUT he had a terrible game against Stanford. Bad choices and his accuracy was off.
I think this may be a difficult spot for the Orange this week in Las Vegas. It's their first road game of the year and they are facing a UNLV team that has a whole lot of talent and speed that is now believing that they belong. Confidence is powerful and this coaching staff has this team in the right frame of mind.
One month ago, if you told me that I was going to say what I'm about to say....I'd tell you no chance...But I think that this game might get ugly for SU and this momentum thing is real for the Rebels.
