there are so many different types of offensive attacks, and more specifically passing attacks. you have to run a system that suits your talent, and quarterback comfort level.
-3 step pass game (slant, hitch, speed out, fade, usually 1 on 1 or 2 by 2 sets, run out of 21 personnel or 10 pers.)
-trips combo and roll out passing- isolating 1 side of the field usually with a backside dig or post. usually 3x1 sets or "trips" with a crossing route and two different depth routes to isolate one or two defenders and compromise their position. lots of china combo, clear out, slant and go, out/fade, dig//post, post/curl, the combos are endless
-air raid. receivers run their pass routes on the fly, and start the play not knowing exactly what they are going to do. extremely hard to get a feel for, and hard to learn. usually 2 by 2 sets almost exclusively out of "10 personnel" ( 1 RB, 0 TE)...lots of sit down routes, and getting the ball out quickly. think hawaii and SMU
-RPO- play action to the running back, usually zone read, followed by QB run or pass to the outside. LOTS of horizontal passing, not a ton of deep stuff...frustrating as hell to watch, because it usually doesnt work unless the RUN game is gashing.
-traditional gun/pistol 4/5 WR sets. typical gun offense that you can run anything out of, counter, sweep, inside/outsize zone, play action, crossing routes, 3 step, etc. extremely versatile.
-pro set passing: run out of the singleback, I form, or using a full back/H-back, Tight Ends. great for what IOWA should want to do. single or double tight end...usually out of 21 or 12 personelle ...motioning the big bodies, fakes to the RB, crossing WR or TE/FB someone should be wide open all the time, which is what we have seen in the past. 11/17 for 237 yards and a score...how many Iowa QBs have put up that stat line...most all of them.
so why is it all of a sudden not working? why can they not get it going? is the run game not gashing enough? are the WR threats not there? have they played against two stout Defenses? hmmm...combination of all three?
Until the wallet is full.
