conferences. who's the best?

my opinion, no matter how good any conference gets, SEC will be called the best because - ???

The SEC was the best last year, and will probably be the best again this year despite losing a lot of strong players. This is how I would rank the top conferences right now.

SEC
Pac 10
Big 12
Big 10
ACC
Big East

To directly answer the question:

"SEC will be called the best because - ???"

...because those southern states are nuts about football. It's just not as important in other parts of the country. Probably because we have new fangled inventions like electricity to enjoy.

After the attendance at Alabama's spring game last year, I bet at least 3 SEC schools will have 90,000 at the spring game. Maybe Tennessee will get to 100K.

OK...about the electricity thing...sorry.... It's really because the SEC schools put more money in their football programs. Colin Cowherd talks about this all the time. Fans are more fanatical, alumni put more money into the budgets, schools put more money into the program. It's just bigger in the south. Bigger equals better in this case.

Yea, I would say top to bottom SEC is best football conference.  But as far as basketball i think we would are middle of the pack.  Everyone in the south lives and breathes football and of all the teams no one is very consistent with there basketball programs. So we are left with the football and thats what we put all the money and effort into.

Its not just SEC either, every school in Texas is huge into football also as is most of the California programs.  Texas is probably the biggest football state out there, unfortunitly the rest of the Big 12 isnt consistent with that.

 

For now we sit atop the hill as the best in my opinion.

This argument is stupid for a couple reasons.      1. It is obvious the SEC is the best conference right now.  2.  Who cares???????
 
It's not even worth talking about because its meaningless and the SEC fans go absolutely ballistic if you question anything about the SEC.  The only good thing about being a Notre Dame fan these days is that I don't have to deal with this crap.

Because if the rankings are for this upcoming season the Big East has one good team, and one team with upside.West VA will be good again, and Pitt could contend, but no one else will really be that good next year. The ACC has Clemson, VT, Wake Forest (decent team), and Miami and FSU will be better after having a good recruiting class.

I think South Florida returns all 11 starters on offense. They will beat Kansas in September. Its a joke if you think Miami or FSU will be better than USF next year.

Well, arguing this is like competing in the special Olympics, you might win and get a prize, but... But last year people were touting the Pac 10, but Oregon went in the tank, AZ st did too. A the end of the year there was USC and a few teams that won some BS bowls. So a lot of conferences can claim they are good, the SEC may be deeper, but as for best sometimes it is a mirage, because if you have a lot of average teams it looks like anyone can beat anyone.

Beating Kansas won't impress me. They're probably the 5th best team in their own conference. South Florida will be decent, but the ACC has more good teams. Pitt was the only team with a decent recruiting class, whereas the ACC has three teams in the top 12 (Miami, Florida St, and Clemson), and had 8 teams with better recruiting classes than West VA (Big East's second best recruiting class).

I know recruits aren't everything, but Clemson returns most people and will be a top 20 team this year. Virginia Tech, Miami, Florida St, NC State, Maryland, Boston College and Wake Forest all have legitimate chances of going to a bowl game this year.

Clemson should be a beast. FSU and Miami can't be any worse, but the ACC is pretty down. Recruits I think don't mean shit the first year as you don't know if you get any production out of them, or if they will even be eligible. Like ND had a great recruiting class, who cares. Will they better than last year, probably, but that won't be too hard.

SEC is the best because they collectively have the best set of defenses.  The reason they have the best defenses is because they put a lot of their better athletes on that side of the ball.  DE and CB are the two positions (along with maybe OT) where there are the fewest natural players coming out of high school and a disproportionately high number of the good ones reside on campuses in the south.  In the SEC the linebackers can chase down the running backs.  Apart from VT, USC, OU, and maybe a couple more that isn't really true of the rest of the country.

Pac 10 was really excellent last year but other than UW and maybe one or two of the Arizona schools I think they all started more than one QB.  It was a total anomaly with regard to the number of injuries to skill position players and QBs in particular.  Never seen anything like it.  Oregon beat USF very easily with their 5th string QB.

Kansas the fifth best team in the Big 12? Okay. Whatever. They will be preseason top 10. Did you happen to see what the BE champ did to the B12 champ? Or maybe what Kansas did to VT? Mizzouri, Kansas, and Oklahoma would all win the ACC. The ACC is awful. AWFUL. Lots of big time names thats all. Clemson? Are you f*ckin serious? Every year everyone says watch out for Clemson. Then they give us the usual 8 or 9 wins.

Why are you talking about the Big 12 in a comparison between the Big East and the ACC? Yes, West Virginia killed Oklahoma, but that was last year. They will still be a great team this year, but who is there after that? The answer is nobody. Pitt could be a good team, and so could South Florida, but neither team will be ranked. South Florida got killed by a team playing with their 5th string QB in the bowl game. Clemson is going to be VERY good this year, Harper is a great QB.

And as far as Kansas being preseason top 10, that has to be a joke. They had a good season, and impressed me a little bit when they beat V-Tech, but they had the advantage of a very, very weak schedule. They only had one tough team that I can remember off the top of my head, and that was Missouri, a game they lost pretty handily. They didn't have Texas, Texas Tech or Oklahoma on their schedule, all of whom I think they would have lost against. Oklahoma will be a top 5 team this year, and Missouri, Texas and Texas Tech will all be better than Kansas. Colorado might even have a better season. Kansas might not even be a bowl team next year.
