Last season, Tanner Mangum ran the BYU offense as a freshman and averaged 2-4 TDs per game, with long passes of over 40 yards. He led the Cougs to a 9-4 season with a disappointing 28-34 loss to No. 22 Utah St in the bowl game.
Fast forward to 2016. This kid was ready to start and lead the Cougs to yet another winning season. But pump the brakes - the 26 year old Taysom Hill has decided to come back to play ball! And of course, the old guy comes back into Mormon nation and guess who has to sit because he has "more time" to play later? Tanner Mangum. As a 20 year old kid who probably is frustrated doing the Provo float after he is done warming the bench for that slapd1ck Taysom Hill, he now finds himself with yet another opportunity to show why he should have started all season long.
He has a completely different style from the one dimensional Hill and can throw bombs down the field. Not to mention the stud Jamaal Williams at RB who will help open up the passing game and help BYU control clock throughout the game.
Now let's look at Wyoming.
They've also got a stud at RB Brian Hill who is contemplating going to the NFL draft. Btw anyone hear about some of these kids sitting the bowl games to protect their draft stock? Hill is 4th in the nation in yards. I'm sure he knows it too. On the other side of the ball the Cowboys cannot stop anyone on defense, giving up 69, 33,56, and 27 over the last 4 games.
Stats...
Wyoming is #106 against the pass and 88th against the run.
BYU is 100th against the pass but 9th against the run.
Offensively, Wyoming is 63rd passing and 37th running.
BYU is 91st passing (Taysom Hill at QB) and 44th in rushing.
This tells me that Wyomings game plan will be to mainly pass against the BYU defense and essentially become one dimensional. BYU I think will come out and surprise this Wyoming team with a balanced attack and a motivated sophomore QB out to prove himself. I think that BYU will come out with an early lead and play ball control the entire 2nd half, disrupting any rhythm the Wyoming offense has. This is going to be bad for Wyoming. If you look at their losses, they were absolutely gashed by opposing running games. In the game where they lost by 56 points vs New Mexico, the New Mexico QB threw 4/5 the entire game.
Other intangibles. BYU lost their bowl game last year and I'm sure have a bad taste in their mouth. They also have a first year coach wanting to close the season out right. Wyoming is entering their first bowl since 2011 and is also excited for the match up.
But I trust in the sexually frustrated Mormons to absolutely destroy Wyoming.
