I have found many interesting comments regarding this game although it is a month away. USC doubters reference the fact that they lost to Oregon State...this is true. In 2006 USC lost two conference games to Oregon State and UCLA. Well with the two or so weeks to prepeare for Michigan in the Rose Bowl they beat them 32-18. I realize that the teams are different and so on.
I think people need to get over the fact that USC lost that game when capping the Rose Bowl...Here is what I believe is the single most important factor....I can probably give Carroll's pre-game speech. " No one mentions us as the best team in the nation, here is our opportunity on our stage to show who we are." They will show up with such a freaking chip on their shoulder, it will not be close!

Alwayson22, I am so over the negative comments of USC, and I am no homer, so sick of "USC lost to Oregon State..USC's offense sucks..etc Joe Pa vs. Carroll at this point in there careers? No contest. I do believe that Penn State possess' some quality athletes, but the overwhelming speed at multiple positions for USC will show. I am pretty sure that the kids at SC have cable and are so sick of hearing about Texas, Florida, Alabama, Oklahoma. Those teams are obviously very talented and deserve all the recognition they are getting. However, Penn State will be showing up for a football game and quickly realize that they are in a track meet. Does anyone in their right mind believe that ANY defense in the Big Ten possess' USC's speed, especially on defense. And to clear it up I am from Columbus, Ohio and once again to USC homer(shit they kicked my teams ass)!
I am not saying that Mark Sanchez is all of a sudden going to become ultra profecient but when capping this which matchup would you prefer Sanchez and his group vs Penn State or Clark and his bunch vs. USC's defense?
Once more I realize that this game is a month away, but I can't believe all of the USC hate, f... it USC blind hate.
In closing do any of the coaches of the teams ahead of USC, really want to play USC? No fricking way!

Your dead on Ashlyn. NOBODY wants to play this team right now. And the fucked thing is that the best defense in the country won't have a chance to display their talent against one of the best offenses in Florida, Oklahoma, Texas or Alabama. Oh well. To the Rose Bowl we go. Penn St. is going to get absolutely DESTROYED. LAY THE POINTS NO MATTER WHAT THE NUMBER!!!!

Of course you would say that you are from California. Well come Rose Bowl we will see. Lots of ppl hated this match up b/c ppl wanted to see USC someone better. You get what you deserved and that's the Rose Bowl. Will USC beat PSU I think so (and I went to PSU 2007) but I doubt they will lay a beatdown on them. Other than that I respect your opinion but it's coming from a homer...anybody know of any good hotels that is cheap for me in Cali? Maybe going to this game not sure yet.

USC is way overrated this year, the only tough game on the road they had, they got beaten by an average team, ORG st. The Pac 10 is at it's poorest level in a long, long time, probably ever. So saying this team is dominating teams like the Wash schools, Az St, etc, really shows nothing.

I see that Godfather still hasn't gotten over his beloved OSU getting blasted by USC earlier on this year. The fact of the matter is PSU and USC are very good teams this year and it SHOULD be a good team when looking at these teams on paper.
But no matter what anybody says about who's overrated, who's underrated, who's whatever...USC's defense has been a constant all year. Their offense may sputter at times but defensively, there's not another team in the nation that can match their speed and athleticism on that side of the ball.
Anything can happen but to say that USC is way overrated is unbelivably stupid. Their offense maybe way overrated but this defense is one of the best in that past 10 years.

USC defense is good. OSU was missing their best player so maybe that would have been a different game. But dominating teams like ND, Wash, WSU, etc what does that really mean? The Pac 10 is basically pure shit this year. You have , maybe 3 good teams. And Cal, Oregon, Arizona, are a stretch calling them a good team, because maybe they have some wins because the bottom half of the conference is just so bad this year. Don't be surprised if Penn st wins this game because they have played far more tough teams than USC.

Well, to win this game Southern Cal. better not start coasting in the second half like they did against ND. I am not especially enchanted with Sanchez but what do I know? I will pull for Penn State to win, of course but don't think they will. I may bet PS if I can get a good line. Good luck on your plays.

Godfather, I don't know why I even reply to your dumb comebacks and remarks but once again, I need to put you in your place in regards to your "because they've played far more tough teams than USC".
Coastal Carolina, Syracuse, Temple, Oregon State were your OOC games. Other than Oregon State, those teams are absolute trash this year.
Not only that, in your vaunted Big-10 conference, Penn State didn't even play Minnesota and Northwestern which are in the top half of the conference. Penn State barely beat OSU, lost to Iowa, and beat a somewhat decent Michigan State team.
There's no way that Penn State played a far better schedule that USC. USC's defense is not good...it's great. I don't care who you play but the fact that this team has given up 86 points in 11 game and they've all been BCS eligible teams is impressive no matter how to swing it.
Stop being blinded by your Big-10 blinders and admit when a team outside of the Big-10 has done somehting of significance. I'll admit that Penn State is a wonderful team and full of athletes just like USC but with Carroll's trackrecord against the Big-10 and in BCS games, you're really going to say they are overrated going into the Rose Bowl?

guess its a good thing that USC will be playing Penn St in their backyard

Peter Griffin - all things being equal, the Big 10 was much stronger top to bottom than the Pac 10. There are 4 Big 10 teams in the Top 25, only 2 for the Pac 10. There are 7 bowl teams in the Big 10, only 5 in the Pac 10. The bottom teams of the Big 10 are more competitive than the bottom teams of the Pac 10 (Ind, Mich, Purde, vs WA, WSU, UCLA) Yeah Penn st played some cupcakes, but they had some good road wins, at Wisc, at OSU, at Purd. USC's good road wins, at Arizona? And even then that was far from an impressive win. IMO, the pac 10 was the weakest of the BCS conferences this year, with maybe the Big east coming close. So saying that the top team, USC, is great, is questionable as most of the pac 10 teams are so lousy.

Godfather, let me break it down to you in simple statistical figures so you can understand.
USC SOS this year is 54th with one game to go
Penn State SOS this year is 49th and their season is complete.
I wouldn't consider winning at Purdue (or even Wisconsin for that matter) much this year. That would be like me claiming a road win at Stanford was impressive. (Purdue 4-7 this year, Stanford 5-7)
From an SC fan, can you understand the lack of excitement for another Rose Bowl game against a great Big-10 opponent? It's nothing against Penn State because I think they are a great team this year but USC and their fans have gotten accustomed to watching their #1 or #2 teams get absolutely throttled by USC. (Look at OSU this year in fact)
And that's partially USC's fault because they didn't go undefeated much like Penn State who stumbled against an inferior conference team. For you and the rest of the Big-10's sake, I hope this is a competitive game because within the past 5-6 years, USC hasn't had much of a challenge against them.
But for you to claim that USC isn't great because they went 10-1 and played almost the exact same schedule at Penn State seems kinda hypocritical. Statistically, these teams matchup extremely well and I hope Penn State comes to play because I would love to see a very competitive Rose Bowl this year.

Who cares what Conference is tougher !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The BigXII in basketball has more final 4 teams since it's inception than anyother conference, it's deep... but it usually doesn't have the BEST team...
PAC 10 may be down, this year, but it's top team is CLEARLY better than anything the BIG 10 has to offer up...
USC could compete in any Conference and be a favorite... Not the same could be said about PSU or tOSU...
USC ROOOOOOOOOOOLLLLLLLLLLLLLLSSSSSSSSSS

USC may own the Big 10 but record is even all time vs PSU. Don't make me bring up what the Lions did to Marcus Allen...just kidding. This line will be somewhere north of 6 points for the Trojans. We'll know in the first how this is going to go. If the PSU O line can create some room for Royster...PSU might win straight up. Trojans stuff the run, blow-out city. But don't forget Mendenhall had some good yards in chunks last year while game still mattered. And 'Quiz Rogers this year. I like the PSU O Line. I also think that the PSU D line gets pressure on Sanchez causing some bonehead throws. No doubt USC has more athletes, but PSU might just be better where it counts, in the trenches. I'm thinking we're in for a hell of a game. My heart says PSU, but my wallet is leaning toward USC. Still lots of time to handicap though!

Very well put Baron. I don't like to compare past teams vs. USC's current team but that's really all I have to go on and from a USC fan's standpoint, I was rooting hard for Oregon State to win this weekend.
And it wasn't because I don't have any respect for Penn State because I have a whole bunch of respect for them. In fact, statistically speaking, they are probably the closest team offensively and defensively to USC.
But as a USC fan, I've seen USC take on the best of the best from the Big-10 over the past six seasons and just destroy them. I don't think that will happen this time but history seems to always slip into my head. I would have loved to have seen USC play Texas/Oklahoma/Florida/Alabama but once again, USC choked in Pac-10 play.
I'm getting more and more pumped for this Rose Bowl game and personally can't wait until the game begins.

Keep in mind fellas that you can't control who is in your conference. Only how much talent you recruit, and how you prepare them for the schedule you have.
In all fairness, USC was the only team in the country that had 100% BCS eligible teams on their schedule. Every other team, in every other conference, had at least 1 team that was designated as a cupcake before the season even started. At least they know they have a tough program and don't want to waste a week by playing someone from the Sun Belt, MAC, WAC, etc.
