And given Texas the ball back with 20 seconds left.. Of course, don't run into punt returned
Seems wimpy to me but I think it would have been correct.I
I re-watched Miami Georgia Tech infamous finish and it seemed UW could have got ball back. Andofcourse, Chaney could havegotinjured, stopping theclock. Similar situation

I think vast majority of NFL coaches will have Penix knelt down for three times and punted the ball away to the Texas with roughly 20 seconds left in the game.

From memory... The third down play was with 50 secs. You kneel, and likely have about 4 seconds left on click for fourth You drop back, and launch a ball oob and kill the four secs. Never even punt.
That's the Miami game I referenced? or tonight?
For sure the internet would have gone insane if UW had lost tonight.
I think coaches need to give more consideration to kneeling 3 times and letting another team have 45 seconds deep in their own end with no timeouts
With moderately more time the debate becomes whether to throw a pass trying to get a first down but risking giving them more time
Running it on 3rd and 7 was the big stupid one as you are very unlikely to get 1st down whereas 1st down you will 3 or maybe 4 chances

teams always do that and its totally stupid, why run with running back when you know defense is trying to strip the ball, yes kneeling is the obvious thing to do

they do the same dumb shit in the nfl now too europa. literally every time a team gets the ball back with say 10 seconds left in the half at theiir own 20 they NEVER kneel. they do a running play. it drives me insane. why! i ve seen guys fumble before. you aint running 80 yards bro. its mind blowing. i guarantee you it didnt cross one coaches mind in the moment last night if we get an injury the clocks going to stop. which is bad coaching and that guy is a good one.

Maybe they were trying to get a 1st down to end the game? Everyone here is adamant they know better than the head coach that lead a team to the #2 ranking. Yet if they got the 1st down last night, nobody would be saying, well why didn’t you take 3 kneel downs? Texas had 2 timeouts, so 3 kneel downs wouldn’t end the game. At that particular moment in time, of course you try to get 10 yards. All you guys are playing out scenarios that didn’t happen. If they took 3 knees and punted and Texas scored to win the game, you all would be saying “why didn’t he try to get a 1st down to end the game??”

come on man. you gonna try to tell me pete carrol made the right decision throwing it on the 1 yard line in the superbowl when marshawn lynch was running it down the pats throat? texas used their last timeout with a minute left. if you take a knee on the next play then punt it into the upper deck texas has time for one play from their 20 insteasd of one play from washingtons 10. which scenario would you rather have?

On the drive before instead of passing on third down, he should have ran the ball to the right, making Texas use their second time out, as well as lining the kick up for the kicker. That way he could have burned the clock out by taking a knee after getting the onside kick. It was a horrible job with time management the whole fourth quarter.
also, when they were up 13 points and they recovered the fumble at their own 30 they ran 5 Street pass Pl. burning off only about 40 seconds of the clock. With a 13 point lead in the fourth quarter they should’ve burned two or three minutes by running the ball a few times.
It was amateur hour

lol it was only a bad decision bc it failed. Nobody says anything if he scored. Likewise, if Washington picked up the first down, nobody saying anything. We just out with pitchforks bc it’s all in hindsight. We also assume it was only one possibility if they decided to punt. What if it’s blocked? Bad snap? PR for touchdown? Happened to Michigan in 2016. We assume it always plays out the way it’s suppose to…nobody here is qualified to even sniff the D1 college coaching ranks. So if he made a call and it’s questionable to us, it’s whatever bc if we were coaching that same team, they wouldn’t be #2

I do appreciate the comment on not second-guessing amazing HC DeBoer
I will say it's not hindsight as everyone was incredulous although I think many people's math was a bit off including me
Ethics aside, why don't Longhorn defenders feign injury in every play? Or can refs finally rule that the clock can rule full 40 seconds?.. Common sense suggests injuries extremely unlikely on kneel play (but it's possible)...
Last question: is it just 10 second runoff? And I that's just defenders choice. ..seems like they recognise injuries (faked or not) as aiding offense to have chance to score but don't extend the argument to defence faking injuries to get ball back
Fyi, I specifically thought prior to yesterday's of UW's ability to close out wins and a big part of that is running down the clock

You're missing the important part, when an offensive player gets hurt, the clock doesn't start until the snap. When a defensive player get hurt, the clock starts on the whistle and then the offense can let 40 secs off the clock the before snapping.
The vast majority of coaches will only kneel on the ball if they know they can take ALL of the time off the clock or if they know they can take it under say 6 seconds and have their QB run around for a few seconds and chuck it in the stands. It's rare you will see a coach take knees, knowing that on 4th down they will have to punt it back to the other team. They would rather at least attempt to pick up and first down and end the game as oppose to having to execute a punt and have to play defense for a couple more snaps. They understand the likelihood of their RB picking up a first down is FAR greater than the chance of a fumble or some other catastrophe, so it's worth the "risk".
And unlike what Vanzack said above, there would not have been only 4 seconds left, it was going to be around 16 seconds. They absolutely would have had to punt the ball back if they took 3 knees.

Yeah, Dillon Johnson's leg injury in the last unnecessary Washington offensive play also saved Texas some 25 seconds of game clock due to the injury time out.
I had the chance to watch Lions/Cowboys replay last night on NFL Network, Mike McCarthy had similar clock and game management crucial mistake, like Kalen DeBoer, inside 2nd half two-minute warning.

I thought this article summarized it pretty well for both drives at the end of the game. The 3rd down call before the field goal and all downs on the last drive were bad.
