This has always kind of been the case but even more so with these crazy expanded conferences and way more playoff spots, these teams that look really good coming into conf play are absolutely hopeless at covering those 14-20 point spreads.
Ole Miss -16 lost SU
USC -14 was down 21-10 only came back and covered due to a pick6 late and actually almost backdoored cuz they got a penalty on that score and gave up a long return
Iowa St -16 can't get into the end zone until almost the 4th quarter against a rebuilding Houston team
Penn St -18 struggling with Illinois
These idiot college kids get too high on their own supply and will usually make enough bonehead plays to make sure they only scrape a win over teams with less talent. All these changes to the CFP are just watering the game down more.
Used to be teams had to start sharp and stay sharp because with just one loss you were basically out of the natty conversation, and teams would run it up to impress the committee. Now you don't need to be impressive at all and you can probably still get into the playoffs with a 2 or 3 losses. There was always plenty of letdowns and backdoors, wins without covering but it's way worse now especially with all the transfers too, many of these teams haven't really played together much, and it shows once they move past the cupcakes on the schedule.
There's still blowouts but many of them AREN'T on the games with the big spreads.

NIL not helping either. No more carrot to dangle as incentive, they've already got their $$..... that means there's nothing you can threaten them with by way of consequences if they put forth a lackluster effort.
No need to outrun the bear...just the next slowest guy
