Miami running the ball very effectively all 2nd half…get down to the 13, and play this puzzy azz strategy to play for the FG. It works out less in their favor than you might think.
AND THEN…uva clearly sees they can’t get the ball back, don’t “let them score” to have a chance? And waits for 25 seconds to elapse before calling timeout number 2?
paid millions of dollars to consistently mismanage the clock
what are these fugging coaches doing?

Virginia moneyline backer here. I said an hour ago. Game looking like a Miami 1 point win. Then after that timeout with all the time taken off. I knew it was bad. Little did I know a chip shot from the middle would be shanked. It’s amazing how this stuff happens with spreads.

Miami should have tried to get the TD instead of worrying about the clock and kicking a fg. They deserve to lose and Diaz surely wont be around for much longer. Just pathetic.

agree the clock was mismanaged. the main mistake was passing the ball for 30 yards on 3rd down (multiple times that drive) when they needed 10. When there is less than 5 minutes, you have to play for first downs.

I just don’t get the mentality either way. Complete mismanagement on both sides. Who in the flying fugg wants the game decided by a field goal kicker…an operation where three people have to touch the ball (one player with his foot), when you are running the ball and moving it so effectively and UVA defense was gassed.
I don’t understand what goes through the mind of these coaches. And who is advising them in game to do this?
what does that conversation sound like? “hey, we are running for 7 YPC, 2:35 left…let’s keep it going and be aggressive”
”nah man, let’s let the FG kicker decide it”
”yeah you are probably right…wait, he fugging missed it” shoot, wish we would have run it in…

this discussion is on the consistently deployed philosophy of packing it up inside the 20 at the end of game and assuming your FG operation will win it rather than your beefy OL and solid RB.

In the NFL Yes...In College...NO..If you are tied...Then sure u can settle for a FG...But if you are in that spot and down 2...with 1st and goal from the 13....with a College kicker....A TD puts them up 4-6 points....Thats why college coaches get paid millions..It DID NOT work out so..YES it is a horrible call...You gotta win those games and Diaz relied on his kicker..His fault

If you’ve ever played football at the college level, you would understand why it’s the wrong. All. 2% or less of players would want the game decided by the kicking operation if there was an alternative.
clearly you punch it in there. And we saw the result of why it doesn’t work.

almost every coach in the country would drain the clock and kick it there. nfl too. it is the way everyone is doing it now. not saying it is right or wrong.

Lol yeah and if they scored a TD with time left and Virginia comes down and scores your crying again. Or Miami fumbles trying to go I. from the 10 or throws picks. It’s a doink , sucks it happened but that’s sports. Like another said 9/10 they make that.

I think a lot of you guys are confusing nfl with college. It’s rare a team would run the clock in the way Miami did last night during college football - They weren’t even running real plays they centered the ball on 1st down and then the QB literally jumped on the ground on third down. That is the way the nfl works every time, I agree, but in college you run your offense with your standard running plays, try to keep the clock ticking, and score a touchdown with as little time as possible. This is a great example as to why this Miami team underachieves so badly on a drive to drive, game to game, and season to season basis - They have a coaching staff that is coaching them as if they are NFL players when in fact they are college kids with major distractions.

Looked like the Near fumbled turnover spooked the coach. He immediately changed the RB and had made his mind up, get in FG range and kill time he clock.

Mia has a very good kicker, thus the chances he makes that kick are pretty good.
The chances that there's a turnover, or a holding call, while trying to score a TD are greater than they are for missing the FG.
While I realize that most of us here on Covers are wayyyyyyy better coaches than the guys who are making a living doing it, I have to side with the decision to kick the FG. And I had a small bet on Mia -4

Everybody seems to forget the RB fumbled and the QB got it going out of bounds a few plays earlier. Don't think that wasn't going through coaches minds at the time. If the team didn't play so sloppy to begin with, yeah keep pushing.
Am sure the Over bettors are going nuts.
I liked the call, had an in-play Under of 61.5 and an Over of 50.5. Got lucky.
That kick was going right through on the left side............and then, hard left turn off the upright. SUCKS for Miami!!!!!

Look what happened to Toledo vs ND when they ran it in and scored a TD right away. The Irish then had plenty of time to go the other way and win the game. People were calling the Toledo coach an idiot for not milking the clock and going for the FG and a win

really? that is the example you use? Toledo scored their last TD from 28 yards out? Who exactly was calling him an idiot for scoring a TD rather than settling for a 50 yard coin flip FG? I know the answer...no one.
Toledo did the right thing, you know why? because actual football players decided the outcome of the game.

do you know how hard it actually is to nail down the field goal operation?
this is a procedure where three people have to touch the ball (one player with his foot!!!), how many times have we seen it where a game is decided in the college leagues by a field goal kicker who fades like a fart in the wind under pressure.
NFL kickers...sure, i get doing that. they dont miss inside of 35 yards. they just dont. but I bet my life savings that if Miami could do it all over again this morning, they would have run different plays down around the goal line. there is no question about it. Some coaches play to win...some coaches play "not to lose"

Manny Diaz, after 5th straight loss to a Power 5 team, insists he was trying to score a touchdown, but decided against it after 1st and 2nd down runs went nowhere.

i mean for virginia. there was 5 minutes left and they were content to give the ball back with a 2 point lead... they should tried to maintain control of the clock for that entire drive. Their defense was too soft 2H to stop Miami from coming down field.

Calm down Duck. You have your panties in a bunch because you don't like how certain coaches choose to coach their teams. It turned out bad. Yep.
I was just using it as an example. I know how far Toledo was out. I was at the game. Plus, I live in ND/Toledo country and know some Toledo fans, I have a neighbor (who was with me at the game) who is from Toledo. Every one of them was bitching about it. Maybe you are not getting the point. The point WAS they wanted him to stop at the two/three yard line. Go down. Kill some clock. Kick in a simple field goal and win the game over a Power 5 school!
Now, you don't agree. That is fine.
