Draft strategy and QBs

Everyone always says to load up on RBs.

But here is the scoring in my league for QBs: TDs = 6 points, 1 point/25 passing yards, 5 points/300 passing yards; interceptions = -2

This league values the QB more than most leagues. The elite QBs in this league scored 350 to 400 points last year; the top RB, Arian Foster, scored 280.

I am not sure how to go about drafting in this league. Is this a case where the RB draft strategy is thrown out the window? Or do you still go for the best RB in the first round to pair with a second- or third-tier QB?

Its not about QB vs other positions. Its about QB vs QB. Obviously the QB will score more but you have about 7-8 who score in the same area of points for the most spot. You can waste a 1st round pick on a QB who is going to score 400 points or wait and grab one who is going to score 360 in the 3rd like Rivers. Just my opinion though.

Point being you can grab just about the same quarterback in the 3rd-4th round then you can in the first. There is no damn way in hell you are finding a reliable RB that late. Rodgers or Rivers. Pretty close. Adrian Peterson or Jahvid Best. Not even close.

Keep your strategy the same, I am in a league with same scoring system.  there are always people that jump on a qb early, and they usually end up at the bottom because their RB are weak and inconsistent. 
Trust me, I did research in my league, since 2005 9 QB's went in 1st round, out of those 9 teams, no one has ever won the league and only twice did a team end up with a winning record.

That being said it only applies to me if i am drafting at the top of the draft. No problem taking a QB after the top guys are gone in the 1st.

I have to agree with ManRam24 & sgarhs1. You still need to go for the elite backs near the top part of the draft.

I am in a 12 team, 1 player keeper league that scores the same.
I have Run DMC and Vick......decision time.

Out of the 12 teams, 6 are keeping QB's....

I am drafting 11th.

My thought is, if I keep Vick, I could probably get Gore or A. Bradshaw at 11.....and grab a top WR at 14.

If I keep McFadden, I could grab a top WR at 11 (or another RB) and get someone like Rivers at 14.....

I would go with McFadden and then another RB at 11 and then a WR at 14.  Should be able to get a pretty good QB in 3 or 4th round.

scratch that.  the more I think about it -- I would keep Vick: he has the ability to score a SHOT TON of points on any given week.  Even a down week for him should still be pretty damn good.  You might still have a good chance at McFadden at 11 but either way that still gives you a chance to get two decent RBs at 11 / 14 or a RB and top tier WR at 11 / 14.

Not sure which is the best option.

Well, after reading the replies here and elsewhere and trying to study as much as I can about similar leagues, I think you keep a top running back.

FWIW, most of the guys on the XM/Sirius Fantasy Sports radio channel all think McFadden (hamstrings, of course, are the big concern) has a big year. Even if what talking heads say doesn't mean much to you, you still have to think he is one of those elite running backs you target. Since you already have him, I would keep him.

You are still gonna get a great QB at No. 14, if you choose to draft one there. I would rather have McFadden and Rivers rather than Vick and one of the running backs left over.

There are a few top-shelf RBs but the way the NFL is nowadays, it doesn't take long to get into a split-carry situations.

QB is much deeper. Even keeping McFadden, I think the odds are pretty good you get one of the consensus top 6 QBs. Even after those guys, you still have Schaub, Ryan, Freeman, Roethlisberger, Bradford, etc.

This is exactly right!  Let the top 3-4 go, and grab a 2nd tier QB in the 3rd or 4th rough.  You can make an arguement to even wait longer, but I would want to make sure I got one of those top 7-8.

I'd keep Vick and take the best available RB on the board at 11.  Draft Vince Young late as a handcuff though.  Any QB can be servicable at the least in that offense.

These 2 aren't even close! Lions are going to sling it all over the field. Stafford has all the intangibles of a franchise QB and is easily a top 10 fantasy QB is he stays healthy this year.
Kolb I think is average at best. Fitz might well make him look better than he really is, but I'm not sold on the guy. I have him as my 17th ranked QB and see that being his ceiling.

just a range... fantasy football calculator has stafford at 8th round average and kolb as 10th round average.  So depending how you draft you should be able to snag one of these guys late
