Yeah......I have followed brazil for about 13 years now, they look the goods especially because they are playing all matches at home.

The Dutch are always a good team to back, good lineups and talent to take things all the way to the final.

Will be playing more throughout the cup.

I really like your pick of the Netherlands, but I also really think Brazil is overrated here.  The Dutch are bringing back a team that looks as strong as the runner up in the last WC, yet they're 35:1 to win it! 

Historically, the home teams in the WC have a huge advantage in the group stage but much less in the later rounds.  This is not surprising; refs will go with the crowd early on, but they don't want to blow a call in the WC final.  Brazil will cruise through the first 3 games, but after that I'm not so sure.  The odds have Brazil 10x more likely than the Dutch to win it all.  Really, 10 times !?

I'm curious if you've looked at the brackets in backing this particular pair, since it is pretty likely that these two teams will face each other at the round of 16. Surely Brazil doesn't deserve to be more than a 3:1 favorite to advance from that game?

Anyway, good luck with your picks.  I would love to see Brazil win, but I won't be putting my heart and $$$ in the same place on this one.

Did you see confederations cup? If so, you shouldnt be in doubt as to why Brazil are favored here, and they are not overrated at all, they are playing at a higher level than any other team now. I dont see this dutch team getting that far at all.

IMO the South Americans have a massive advantage with the W/C being in Brazil considering climate, altitude in some places + the amount of fans they will have. I cannot see any other European nation getting close apart from Spain and Germany. The Dutch are old and even though they played well through the qualifiers, I just can't see them doing to well in a Group with Spain and Chile (us Aussies will be lucky to score a goal). Chile did well in a very tough South American qualifying campaign. The only real dark horse I see is Uruguay especially with Suarez the way he has been playing.

I'm a big brazil fan so I'm going to back them heavy.....the odds are not really that big but I have them at 4:1 which I think is ok....the Dutch are a value+ play for me... they have the goods to go all the way and the odds represent real value....I know you should never bet with your heart, but I'll be making more plays throughout the cup.

Good post. Not so sure Belgium will do as well as everyone thinks. Good squad on paper but not quite convincing enough as a team. Croatia and Russia are another I think will struggle in the group stages especially in this heat. If it came down to POrtugal vs Belgium, Portugal would be my pick here. Team's been together for a long time and that could mean Messi vs Ronaldo!

I'm afraid the Netherlands won't get too far in the tournament. They are in a really tough group with Spain and Chili. Although they have some world class players as Robben and Van Persie (not sure yet if Van Gaal is going to select Sneijder), their defensive line is pretty weak overall. Even if they make it through to the second round, they will probably be up against Argentina, which will be really tough.

No, it's even worse than that.  The 2nd team in Group B will likely face Brazil in the first elimination game, not Argentina.  The only good news for the "Group of Death" teams is that the group winner wouldn't have to face Brazil until the final.  They might get lucky and have someone else knock the hosts out for them before then.

I did see the Confederations Cup, and I am indeed hoping that Spain's pathetic showing in that final is a huge factor driving the odds on both Brazil and Spain.  Obviously, if both teams look like that throughout this WC, then del Bosque will watch the Brazilians celebrate their victory from his house in Spain.  That game exposed just how badly tiki-taka can disintegrate if Spain is forced to play with desperation, from behind.

However, I also watched the 2009 Confederations Cup, when Brazil won and Spain got trounced in the semi-final by--ouch--the US.  A year later, both teams looked the same for exactly one game into the 2010 World Cup.    The bottom line is that I don't read too much into any one game.  International teams can change dramatically from one year to the next, especially in WC years.

I haven't seen Brazil play since the '13 Confed Cup, though.  Can you explain why you think Brazil is playing at higher level than other teams?
