Interesting article about high/low end gyms in the New York Times. They talked about the use of iPods and how it has impacted the sense of community in the gyms. To me this is one of the things that I miss the most about working out. Everyone is in their own world and even getting a good spot seems bothersome. Playing with the song list also distracts me. Do you train with an iPod and has it helped your actually hurt the intensity of your session ? I use it mostly now just for cardio.

Yeah, I love it for cardio, but it throws off my rhythm when lifting. I just feel it take away from the gym experience. Every one is in their own world and getting a spot seem to bother a lot of people with iPods.

yes i guess it's a drawback for getting a spot but i dont go to the gym to make friends, i go to work out...and since 95% of the people at the gym annoy me anyway i MUST workout with my iPod
but other than that i think if you listen to the right music it's a great motivator...some days when i'm dragging i play the right music and it helps to pump me up and get me through the session

I prefer to work out alone. It's more productive. Weathered hit the nail on the head about going there to work out and not to make friends, and also that the right music is a good motivator. I can't imagine not having my ipod while working out. I have a low tolerance for the few songs that they keep playing over and over again on the gym's system. It seems like every time I pause my ipod or take off my headphones I hear Lady Gaga or Usher. Horrible!

100% Nailed it right on the head!!!!Im same way also I MUST have ipod when I workout, it really does make a difference...At my Gym people are there to talk and socialize then do occionsial set....When I have Ipod on they still come and talk to me...Guys you have to remember when you go to gym your there to workout not talk....Its not happy hour...not a sports bar or coffee shop. Like it is at my gym.. They used to be open 24 hours now they open at 5am till midnightI need to lose 25lbs and im going to start doing 90min-2 hours of cardio every day but that means ill have to get up at 2:30-3am to get cardio then workout in just to make time to get my meals in..I know it sucks and leaves no social time but social time/bars=FAT....Also it means I can get there before all the talkers get there as I can have gym to myself and get in get done and get out...go home shower...eat after hour then go back to bed. I think gym should place no talk rule when working out

All should be banned - cardio allowable. Gym music only.
Way too dangerous in there around dumbell racks and barbells...communication is important. Ther little guys are fine on the cables and machines but lose that shit if you're pushing/pulling big weight around the big boys, either that or have your head on a swivel.

How many times has someone with headphones caused you to get injured?
What about the "big boys" who slam their weights and throw them down?
I WANT to be in my own world at the gym. Its not party time. Its usually 9 AM for me so I need a wake up that doesnt include listening to "the big boys" grunt and yell while lifting or the new Mylie Cyrus song on the radio....
