My doctor tried to put me on that crap a few years ago and I refused. I was in my early 30s, fairly fit and thought it was ridiculous that I needed a cholesterol drug. I talked to a lot of doctors and other folks and learned that most of us are swimming upstream when it comes to fighting high cholesterol. As you probably know, 80% of cholesterol is hereditary.
I was able to lower mine by about 20% by stepping up the exercise, cutting out most refined sugar, and eating more veggies. I made sure I added 3-4 days of cardio workouts to my routine.
Cutting sugar out was hard because i like to drink wine and I wasn't going to give that up, so I pretty much decided to cut out everything else. I rarely eat sweets now. My doc gave me a chart that described a "Mediterranean diet" and I try to follow that. Basically very little red meat and worthless carbs - lots of fish and veggies. This has been very helpful. I eat read meat about twice a month if that and I used to eat it three times a week or so. Don't get me wrong, I still don't eat as good as I should but if you are not managing your diet well now, you can improve your cholesterol tremendously.
It's one of those things that sucks but it's either eat right or take the pills.
