A teen whose robbery attempt at a convenience store was foiled when the owner struck him in the head with a baseball bat has died, North Las Vegas Police said Sunday morning.
Police spokesman Tim Bedwell said the 17-year-old Henderson resident, who police believe is a citizen of Russian, died from injuries he suffered during the July 21 incident.
Authorities said the boy, who hasn't been identified, entered the Family Shop convenience store, 2014 W. Ann Road, at 2:15 a.m. with what appeared to be a handgun.
The clerk was complying with the suspect's demands for cigarettes and money when two customers entered the store and distracted the suspect — at which point the clerk grabbed an aluminum baseball bat and hit the suspect in the head at least once, police said.
After the robbery attempt, detectives looked at surveillance video from the store and spoke with the two witnesses and the clerk. Police also determined the suspect's handgun was fake.
Bedwell said at the time that the clerk's actions appeared to be a justifiable use of force, but the investigation is ongoing. Police said no arrests have been made and no charges have been filed in the case.

Russian, 17, very jumpy and inexperienced as well as a fake gun. Sounds to me like it could have been a gang initiation or something along those lines as this kid was obviously a newbie to the convenience store robbery caper.
