I hope they are fine but yeah... that's just a bad move. They were out in the middle of nowhere... probably not armed. In a vast wilderness with no civilation within I don't know how many miles. Just a bad decision in my opinion. Doing that in the states is somewhat risky let alone Peru.

An Oakland couple who haven't been heard from in Peru for nearly a
month were spotted on a boat in a river in a remote part of the country,
U.S. and Peruvian officials told relatives Tuesday.
Garrett Hand and
Fitzgerald said the families would not relax until Hand and Neal return home.
Officials
with the U.S. State Department said they were awaiting more information
before making a statement about the couple's status.

have you ever been to South America? traveling is about being safe and smart. Can these things happen? Yes, but to say "why would someone go to Peru?", is really an uneducated statement. that specific town? I don't know, but to lump Peru and other "Third World Countries" as you state is very egocentric.
Travel some more and tell me you will feel the same way. Highly doubt it

This thread start is semi-knowledge lacking...

Yes, it's spectaculer. Machu Pichu and Cusco go hand in in hand and they are one of the most beautiful places on earth.
The only people that are in danger in Peru are the phucking Spaniards. They won't get one single restaurant meal that doesn't have a booger, loogy or farmers shot in it.
Travel the world and experience new cultures, sights, history and friendly smiling people. Believe nothing you read or hear in the media - it's a load of dog chit. America is where the real trouble is.
Far as these two I'm guessing they ventured into an off limits area doing god knows what. Sort of like visiting here in Los Angeles and exploring South Central L.A.

Why would anyone gamble? I mean, people have been known to lose money! And then there are those idiots that fly in airplanes? Are they crazy? They've been known to crash!! So many head scratchers in the world.

You take risks every time you jump into your car to go somewhere. That said, I'm simply not going to go to ANY South American country and go hiking with my wife in the forest without weapons for protection. For that matter, I wouldn't do it WITH weapons unless I'm with a group of fifty. And I won't step foot in any part of Mexico. There's just nicer safer places in the world. Mexico is a shîthole full of violence and I don't care about the nice resorts there.

The question "Why would anyone travel to a third world country?
is a rhetorical question. I was trying to make a point that you are stupid to travel to a third world country.
I would never go to Mexico, Central America, and South America. I don't care if you guys think it's paradise, i still wouldn't go
WHY? because I don't want to be missing a limb and be brought back in a bodybag without a head. Understand now?
I would rather vacation in Detroit and Cleveland, the two shittholes of America, then vacation in those Latin countries. Also, Latinos are vicious and evil people, so you don't want to mess in their terriotory.
