I really like the look of saltwater tanks in homes, I think it gives the room a very nice touch and great lighting. I do not own one but is something I am going to look into when I graduate in December. Any advice or recommendations out there? I was thinking starting small with just a few fish. Thanks for the info

aquariumadvice.com they have a beginners forum to get you started. Research first before you start buying.

It's a great hobby I highly recommend it and it is relaxing. I used to watch my tank like a tv sometimes.

Don't have a salt tank atm but I did for a few years and plan on putting one together again.

I've had a subscription for Tropical Fish Hobbyist for nine years now. It is the best and longest running fish hobby periodical in the country. I would recommend getting a few issues. You may be able to get back issues for a lesser price on line.

I have only had freshwater fish but I have flourished in keeping my tanks going for years.

Even though I have never ran a marine tank I think I could give you some tips. Set it up with what makes you happy: live rock, coral, whatever. Get the least expensive equipment to start with. Notice I didn't say cheapest. I said least expensive. Shop around your city to get the best quality for the best price. You can even order stuff like that on-line. If you do take my advice and get an issue of Tropical Fish Hobbyist in the back there are classifieds that sell these products.

At every location you go to look at the quality of all the inhabitants in every tank. If that shop looks like they keep their equipment and livestock in good shape chances are they are in good shape. If the tanks and fish look like crap run away.

Before you actually purchase any livestock for your tank have the tank run for at least 30 days. That will allow the water to age, the biological filter to mature, and give you practice on monitoring the water parameters (pH, hardness, temp, etc)

When you actually purchase the fish start with clownfish (like Nemo). Clownfish are one of the least expensive and hardiest marine fish. The main reason are they are bred commercially which brings the price down. That also is the reason they are hardier than other marines. They have been bred in tanks and vats so they are used to captivity. Other more expensive maines are caught in the wild.

Even saying that, clownfish are probably $20 per fish if not more. You don't want it to croak the first day you bring it home. Get all of the advice you can from fish shop employees, magazines, and on-line. Nut is right about it being relaxing.

If you ever need advice about freshwater fish then I could definitely be of there. A lot of people don't realize how good you can make a freshwater tank look. I personally like the look of green plants, rocks, and driftwood. But to each his own. If you haven't ruled out a freshwater tank check out Takashi Amano. He is like Michaelangelo designing a freshwater tank.

Saltwater or dont even bother if you ask me..you can get some crazy stuff for tanks even as a beginner..had a tank for years..one pound of live rock per gallon helps with biological filtration, crabs, snails and clams will do the same..10% water change once every 45 days[some say once a month but once your tank is in tune youll be fine]

wetwebmedia.com for any questions, great site been around  a long time just search for your problem/question and its been asked many ways with a several responses

    aquacon.com for live rock,fish,snail,crabs,everything

ebay has some good deals even bought snails from a guy who collects them off of piers

    frags.org

ipsf.com has some starter kits for after setup like snails and crab packages

Dont be afraid to order live things and have them shipped ive never had any problems and the difference from online to local store is sometimes 50% or more

GL its great hobby and one thats hard to stop

Way too much work for upkeep of sensitive expensive fish. My friend had over 1000 bucks in his tank and endless time doing this and that. It's cool sure. But I know what he goes through to keep it up and not worth it in my opinion.

Counting the tank, I bet he has easy $2500+ in that shit.

What gets his dick hard is people commenting on how nice it is......."Hey dude, that coral is bad ass along with all those other shits in there."

Then he acts like it is no big deal

i like the idea of having a fish tank rather than pets (dogs or cats).  Fish only needs to be fed.  Tank only needs to be clean.  With other pets, you have to give them attention.

Start with fresh-water tank before you move onto the next level up, of which is highly regarded by previous postings.

If you believe in fung-shui, the idea of zen isn't too bad.

Why salt water instead of fresh? I would start with fresh and have salt as a long term goal....Unless you have money to piss away...Then go for it!
