Does this pain ever go away?
My dad just had back surgery last month. A full fusion procedure. It was his second surgery in an attempt to repair a slipped disc which was impinging on the sciatic nerve in the last year.
I can tell you that the surgeries have been nothing short of a nightmare..... he has been bedridden for the last 4 weeks.....legs are noticeable smaller than ever, and he cannot walk without the aid of a walker. Do not depend on back surgery to fix anything.
From a personal standpoint, I will never get back surgery. Started doing yoga, and have greatly reduced the intensity of my weight workouts; also hit up a paleo diet and dropped a few lbs.
Backs are tricky. Stretching, core strength, and limited sitting are huge in fighting chronic back problems. Chiropractors can be successful as well.
But, when you start going the pain pill and cortisone shot route, understand that the surgeries are not far off....and they will be promoted by the physicians as high probability fix it procedures, and nothing could be further from the truth. The scenario of being healed through surgery is more akin to 50/50.

Funny to see this post because I had to wait to get on computer today until I could stand to sit upright in a chair.I'm like Vern, currently suffer because I slept wrong Sunday night and no matter what I do I won't walk normal until next Sunday. I would throw it by bending over to tye my shoe or any sideward move.If I only had a minor tweak I use to try my rowing machine or a sauna. If it was bad I would literally crawl to the swimming pool and workout my legs/back in the water that helped. Never went to Chiro.
I know 3 people in local sphere that have back problems and vast amounts of money. Each of these people have had repeated surgeries (each 2 or more) with only moderate relief at best. They self-medicate to the exstent they are comfortable and can be comfortable around people. I will just say surgery has not been the answer to 3 people to whom money is no problem to solve their own back problems.
