I know the Sports Card industry is booming right now. Because of the Pandemic. I don't think it will last long, but I was going to try and get back in it myself. I haven't collected since 2010.
I'm looking at the price of the boxes and it's outrageously high. Panini is like EA SPORTS (supply & demand) and the price for their boxes are in the thousands. And of course people on Youtube buy them in cases. It sucks.
Gone are the days where packs and boxes are cheap. And if they are.. you're not getting anything. Does anyone think this boom will last for just a short period and the prices will go down?
Thanks.

I haven't bought any since the late 80's/early 90's. That era was the beginning of the market flood. When certain companies created "golden tickets" as an incentive to buy, I got out.

@THEMUGG DITTO I'm sitting with Bonds, McGwire, Canseco, Palmeiro, Clemens, Griffy Jr, Frank Thomas, all Rookies and nobody wants them.
I had all these rookies and left then on the shelf in my closet when we moved when I was 17. Hadn't looked at them for years and just forgot them. Also had a ton of Shaq rookies. Ton of Spreewell rookies too. Enough to buy a decent Turkey Sandwich. I switched from baseball to hoop in like '91 so Shaq was the best of the error. I had stopped collecting before Iverson, Kobe, etc.

My friend told me about this and I was just in utter disbelief. It's part of the new NFT (Non-fungible token) trend.
The new sports card fad is "moments." They're not actually physical sports cards but 10 second clips with unique serial numbers that have sold for thousands of dollars. Just think of "moments" as sports card but virtual. Nothing physical, you just own the rights to it. It's officially endorsed by the NBA and is only available in the USA as of now.
My friend was telling me that if the NBA allows this into the Chinese market (that's a big market for the NBA) that these cards could EXPLODE in value and demand. The time to get into them was early 2021 and it peaked in February. Some of these "moments" selling as high as $50,000+ due to market demand. Yes, you read that correctly. $50,000+ real dollars for a virtual 10 second clip with unique codes and serial numbers. Baffling, I know. But as usual, due diligence and only "invest" money that you can afford to lose..
"Schrödinger's bet." A bet that loses when you bet it but wins when you DON'T bet it...

Does Panini still make those awesome NHL sticker books?
Getting that every year and then spending the entire winter walking into random convenience stores and pharmacies hunting for the aisle that MIGHT have Panini sticker packs was such a thrill.

Absolutely ridiculous.
Then again, the “new” China rich will buy anything.

Used to collect in the 80's and 90's ..Bought my son a panini box of football cards in 2016 for $32 , Now the same style card of the 2021 issued FB cards is $390 and has half the amount of packs in the box ..
Just bought a $50 draft leaf box that is actually just a set that contains 50 cards and 2 autographs....RIP OFF...
I hope the sports card market crashes again , cant believe people are actually buying new boxes for $390-2k ...
BEST OF HEALTH, HAPPINESS,WEALTH, BLESSINGS and LUCK TO ALL !!

From about 5th to 7th grade the best feeling was saving up for a box. I hustled cards. Knew all my classmates favorite players so you could always flip a .50 card that has no chance of appreciating in value much for a buck or two. I would hit the local card shop downtown almost daily. Walk to the Laney flea market on Saturday, catch BART to the Ashby flea market on Sunday. Rinse and repeat.

@THEMUGG DITTO I'm sitting with Bonds, McGwire, Canseco, Palmeiro, Clemens, Griffy Jr, Frank Thomas, all Rookies and nobody wants them.
Know what you mean. They have a rated value but no one will pay it. I've probably got about 30k cards in those 800-count boxes stacked in a spare closet. I could probably knock that down to about a thousand that I wanna keep.

Sounds familiar...What a time to be a kid.
Was lucky my first job off the books at 12/13 was working at a sports card shop...Owner used to let me buy cards from customers at what he'd offer , and then sell them to friends or at shows....Thurman Thomas , Bruce , Jimbo , Mogliny rookies were bought for 33% of their value and quickly sold at 80+% ...
Unfortunately my Dumb Arse was skipping school for autographs at the AUD ...Wish I would have kept most of those sticks and wrestling stuff ....Just saw some Macho Man Randy Savage worn sun glasses on Ebay that sold for $4800 ...My buddy and I sold them for $7 Bisons tickets and 20 wings ...lol .
