Recently came across this article which talked about virtual worlds - three dimensional environments in which you can interact with others and create objects as part of that interaction. You apparently appear as an avatar in the virtual world - a virtual representation of you (a virtual ego) which can take on any shape or form as you wish, depending on the virtual world you're in.
Here are examples of virtual world games for adults: Second Life - Users can explore the world as their avatars, meet other residents, socialize, participate in individual and group activities, build, create, shop and even trade virtual property. World of Warcraft - A massively multiplayer online role playing game (MMORPG), this is currently the world's most subscribed MMORPG and a part of the Guinness Book of World Records. PlayStation Home - A virtual 3D social gaming platform wherein users can create a custom avatar, which can be groomed realistically, and each one of the avatars is given a personal apartment that they can decorate with free, bought or won items.
There are even some very popular virtual worlds for kids such as: Neopets - This one is a virtual pets website where visitors can create accounts, own virtual pets and buy virtual items for them using one of two virtual currencies. Gaia Online - An anime-themed social networking and forums-based website where members receive a customizable avatar that can travel from place to place, interacting with the virtual environment. Club Penguin - Designed for children aged 6-14, this is an MMO involving a virtual world containing a range of online games and activities.
There are many more, these were the most popular ones I could find. Anyone here has any sort of experience with any one of these virtual worlds, or similar ones?
