A man has been arrested in connection with an
alleged cricket betting scam centred on the current Test between
Pakistan and England at Lord's.
The Newsof the World claims it gave £150,000 to a middleman who provided details about three "no balls" which later took place when he predicted.
Scotland Yard said a 35-year-old man was being held on suspicion of conspiracy to defraud bookmakers.
Pakistan and England said the game would resume on Sunday as planned.
A joint statement issued by the International Cricket Council (ICC), the
England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) and the Pakistan Cricket Board
(PCB) read: "No players nor team officials have been arrested in
relation to this incident and the fourth npower Test match will continue
as scheduled on Sunday.
As this is now subject to a police investigation neither ICC, ECB,
PCB nor the ground authority, the MCC, will make any further comment."
The statement said the ICC, ECB, PCB, along with the ICC
Anti-Corruption and Security Unit, were assisting the police with their
inquiries.
The News of the World alleges that Pakistani players were secretly paid to deliberately bowl "no balls" during the Test.
A "no ball" occurs when a bowler oversteps the line behind which balls should be delivered.
The newspaper claims it was given pre-warning of three separate incidents by the Pakistan team.
It said members of its reporting team posed as businessmen
and paid a middleman who told them exactly what would happen in the next
day's play.
The allegations relate to three "no balls" delivered by Mohammad Amir and Mohammad Asif on Thursday and Friday.

Just when i was going to say Mohammad Amir is the best new young bowler this happens
GBP do you think this may be the end of the road for Pakistan as a cricket nation? I mean with all the terrorist activity going on England gave them a place to call theyre own they played Australia in England but after this i think if the PCB has any credibility they will call off the England Tour and the upcoming New Zealand Tour, get rid of all the current pakistan players and start fresh maybe in a year or so.

Agree ban Pakistan from International cricket for 1-2 years and start a fresh. Everyone who watches cricket on TV or goes to the ground and pays high ticket prices cheated. Bowling no balls affects the whole game outcomes, extra bowls have to be bowled, more run oppertunities, the ball becomes more worn so no longer is it a newish ball, the whole game is changed.
Those no balls 3 in one over were a step over the line by about a yard, the bowler wanted to make sure the no ball was seen. As you know most no balls are called even a big toe over the line, this was so blatant, so corrupt. According to SKY BET spokesman, Millions are bet on these markets in Asia, Hong Kong..
I watched the game today, even the England players were down and glum, even though it was an easy victory, there was no pleasure in victory. The usual post match presentations did not take place on the field, but in the pavillion.

They will suffer when they get back, as you know Cricket in Pakistan and India is there way of life, they eat and drink cricket. Cricket players are like film stars out there, they will suffer the wroth of the people of Pakistan.

During World War II, the silhouetted image of Bellerophon the warrior, mounted on the winged Pegasus, was adopted by the United Kingdom's
newly-raised parachute troops in 1941 as their upper sleeve insignia.
The image clearly symbolized a warrior arriving at a battle by air, the
same tactics used by paratroopers.
The square upper-sleeve insignia comprised Bellerophon/Pegasus in light
blue on a maroon background. The insignia was designed by famous
English novelist Daphne du Maurier, who was married to the commander of the 1st Airborne Division (and later the expanded British Airborne Forces), General Frederick "Boy" Browning.
The maroon background on the insignia was later used again by the
Airborne Forces when they adopted the famous maroon beret in Summer
1942. The beret was the origin of the German nickname for British
airborne troops, The Red Devils. Today's Parachute Regiment carries on the maroon beret tradition.

The England team believes the Pakistan players named
in the betting probe that has engulfed the tourists should sit out the
rest of the tour.
England are set to play Pakistan in two Twenty20 matches and five one-dayers.
Professional
Cricketers Association boss Angus Porter told the BBC the England team
thought it "preferable" that those involved did not play.
"It's very difficult for the one-day series, everybody will be
studying every aspect, any no-balls or wides or somebody getting out in a
particular fashion."
And current England captain Andrew Strauss
said it was up to cricket's administrators to decide whether the series
should proceed or not.

Pakistan 'corruption' trio charged and suspended by ICC
The three Pakistan cricketers accused of corruption have been charged
with various offences by the International Cricket Council (ICC).
Asif and Amir are alleged to have bowled three no-balls at
pre-determined times to facilitate betting coups after a "middle-man"
was reported to have accepted £150,000 from an
undercover reporter from the News of the World,
who published the story on Sunday.
"We will not tolerate corruption in cricket - simple as that," said ICC chief executive Haroon Lorgat

Just watched on TV very long press conference with International Cricket Board and its own anti curruption unit. It is unbelievable. Every cricketer recieves regular education on corruption how to avoid approaches, what to do etc. Every player attends these educational courses on a regular basis.
At every game, in and around the dressing rooms and the players hotels, the cricket in house anti curruption unit staff are patrolling, keeping watch and keeping known undisirables getting any where near the players.
The cricket board has a manned 24hr hot line for cricketers or members of public to report concerns.
He admitted the hot line gets hundreds of tip offs.
But they have no powers to do undercover work , stings etc. They get tip offs about players but cant act until hard evidence. They have no power to check phone calls, bank statments etc. They can have suspicionsabout players but cant do anything until hard evidence comes, and they have no power to get that evidence. Thats why it took a newspaper in a sting operation tp get the evidence.
My advice, no cricket match is ever safe to bet on.
