Asteroid to hit Earth 2012?

Is this fact or fiction? I just noticed that they retired the Space Shuttle Discovery which absolutely looked like it can go on another dozen missions. I wonder if they're prepping her now for high ranking officials to escape destruction?

  It says very clearly that the asteroid will be over 4 million miles from earth.  Why would that be a concern?  Is the sky falling again?

While there has been discussions of this for year there is no way in hell an average American would be able to take the force on the body that is required in a space shuttle to get into space or for that matter live in space for a period of time.  The high ranking officials would die one way or another if this was the truth.
