Question

I was getting Norton free from Comcast. I am changing to AT&T for my internet. I use windows 8, so should I buy Norton or something else. I heard not to use any free anti-virus. They wrote the book Computers for Idiots about me.

Any suggestions.

Horse, I just know windows security essentials. Ya can just google the latest version...it&#x27;s free to download and drop on your DT.. Does a hell of a job. Used to pay for those anti virus big names and it was borderline ridiculous. My .02.

I had nothing but problems with Norton and McAfee....  If you go the free route with the Windows Security Essentials, also get SuperAntiSpyware...  I believe they can work together and that is a really good anti-spyware program.   I had that on my last computer...  it is free also

In the early years of internet, Norton sales personal were charged with infecting pc&#x27;s with a virus so frequently that it was termed "The Norton Bug" Now the "Microsoft" name seems to be very popular with the same type of vermin.

Windows 8.1 comes with "Windows Defender" already installed. Just make sure it is running and you don't need anything else.

Windows Defender is part of Microsoft Security Esseentials (another part if the firewall).

If Norton has been working for you then why change. It's only like $79 a year for 4 computers.

I bought it and have had it for the last 4 or so years. Norton even redid my computer remotely when I first purchased it to get rid of the issue/bug I had already on my computer.

The Microsoft antivirus and free stuff doesn't work for me. If anything, I think those free ones freeze up your computer to try to force you into buying the antivirus. It's like a scam and justification that if you are too cheap to buy their product then they will screw with you after the trial period or whatever. Just guessin.

I ran free AVG for a while &amp; found it to be almost useless. It would tell you when you got a virus but it didn&#x27;t do much to ward them off. I&#x27;ve been using MSE along with Malwarebytes for a while now &amp; it&#x27;s fine.......free too. Honestly, I think a lot of being safe has to do with your surfing habits.

Agree 100% but even Covers had a few there were blocked by Norton. TJ I was getting it free from Comcast but leaving them.

Thanks Thorpe I will check. I was surprised when I bought my Dell two years ago. This thing came with nothing. If you want Excel, Power Point etc you have to buy those separate. I remember ten years ago it seemed like all computers were loaded with all that stuff.

Thorpe I do have Defender. But it says the app has been turned off. Not sure how to turn it on.

Factory set to off...dunno why.

...defender can be a bich sometimes because it will prompt you to enter every sight. Try it out - no like turn it off. msft essential is strong and has plenty of extreme firewall.
