Its a matter of etiquette... the woman should have given the kid the ball after she took the picture with it...
It is because of the lack of understanding on what the right thing was to do in that situation that the crying kid needs to be consoled with the charity ball... which is not even giving the kid the actual ball, but just a ball to shut him up...

So it was a bunch of kids sitting together about 10 kids... and a foul ball is hit our way... some brought their gloves with them hoping to catch one... the ball lands about 3 rows in front of us and the guy who catches it ask that people pass the ball to the group of kids...
so at the end of the game we literally put all of our names in a hat and my friend's dad picked the winner of who got the ball in the end... I guess he could have gone with the idea of saying it is his son's birthday and he should get the ball, but instead we did a lottery... I didnt win, but what I learned was that some times gambling is the best way of solving problems...

why should a kid get the ball just because it was near him. everyone likes to catch a foulball and they have every right to keep it for any reason they might want to. there are plenty of souveniers available for purchase at every stadium including official baseballs.

A couple years ago when ManRam was playing left field for the Dodgers he threw a warm up ball into our section of the bleachers. After bouncing off of four different sets of hands, it lands at my feet. First time in 20 years or so of going to baseball games that I finally caught a ball(well sort caught). First thing I did was give it to the kid nearest to me that was all decked out in Dodgers gear(I'm a Tigers fan and had on Tigers gear). I asked his parents if it was cool that I took a couple of pics of myself and the kid with the ball. They were cool with it and everyone walked away happy about the situation.
Now had that ball come from a Miguel Cabrera home run or off a Tige bat in general, I can't say I would have been so generous. Most likely without any historical significance though, I'm giving the ball to the nearest youngster.

Oh yeah, I do agree with the OP. That kid acting that way was pretty sad though. Yes the older couple should have given him the ball, but I hope the kids parents teach him a life lesson about cryin to get things you want.

In arizona last year some little kid got thrown a ball by a player and a kid wearing and opposing teams hat who was sitting a few rows away started crying into his moms shoulder like a little bitch and making a big scene. The 10 year old that originally got the ball walked down and gave it to the cry baby because it obviously meant more to him. The whole thing was caught on camera and the announcers were loving how stand up of a guy this kid was at such a young age. They decided to invite the kid who gave the ball away and the cry baby into the booth to hear more about it. They hooked the nice kid up with some great dback souvenirs and I forget what they did for the crybaby. I don't think they did much. They just were asking him how excited he was the other kid got the ball and stuff. Just goes to show you if you do the right thing you will get rewarded sometimes.
In spring training this year......lets retrace a sec for a brief history of my luck as a fan. I have been to over 100 baseball games and have have had foul balls hit my hand with 5 others all deflecting it. One knocked my dip cup out of my hand and spilled all over myself and the ump chasing me down for sneaking past him. Hockey 0-100 also. But, this spring on a drunken friday night I caught a nelson cruz laser beam and was too pumped. My friend nudged me and said give it to those kids. After a little hesitation and realizing it will just collect dust in drawer if i kept it, I decided to give it to the little girl who was a huge ranger fan. The right move for sure....even though I don't remember if i even got a thank you. Pretty sure I didn't but maybe she was just shy or something.
