I train dobermans and one of my customers calls me yesterday and asks if I will send him a training certificate for his dog which was trained by us. He then relays a harrowing story of a late night traffic stop where both officers approached the car with weapons drawn, unfortunately the passenger window was open and the dudes doby was curled in the front seat.all our dogs are trained to respond to a brandished weapon so when the dog spots the cop with his weapon in hand he leaps out of the window and latches on to the cop with his weapon in hand..hard very hard. The officer yells up a storm and the cop on the drivers side opens up on the dog killing him. The cops are trying to charge my buddy with resisting and assault with a trained attack dog.
He did not command the dog to respond and needed our certificate to prove to the cops that the dog had been conditioned to respond to a brandished weapons.
It's a big god damn mess I have been summoned to go testify not looking forward to this bullshit from the cops as I have been through it once before. I train guard dogs not attack dogs and although the training is very similar the results are not but the stupid cops only see it that way when it's one of their dogs involved.
Guard dogs are taught to latch and hold where an attack dog is taught to disarm and disable the significant difference being that once the officer dropped his weapon no further attack proceeds from a guard whereas an attack dog tries to rip the guys throat out.
I understand the fear the cops have as the understand the ability of a dog to damage a human being but I also feel that approaching a vehicle on a routine traffic stop with a drawn weapon is asking for trouble.
My buddy is facing 20k in fines and 30 days in jail if convicted...pure bullshit if the dog had been attack trained it a cut and dry case, guilty. If proven the dog was guard trained it's case dismissed..not looking forward to this at all

It does the guy just lost it I can provide on easily but I still have to provide the court with our procedures.. the funny thing is we train for the department also..pure crap they just don't want to explain their approach on the car so anytime a dog responds to their actions they insist that it must be attacking and not guarding even though in this instance their efforts are pretty futile as the guy was still in his vehicle when this all occurred and it was before they even asked for his paperwork.

Just be truthful in court and let the story be told.
My Rottweiler is very aggressive about protecting my SUV. Anybody who walks anywhere near my car gets growled and snapped at. I always keep my windows at least 3/4 closed for that reason.
It always amazes me how people are so naive about guard dogs. "Is he friendly? Can I pet him" and all kinds of stupid remarks.
Idiots.

The dog can be approached easily when not on guard but will respond instantly to a brandished weapon..the cops also KNOW this but they will lie and make up some reason why the approached the car with weapons out..it will get dragged out and then dismissed after I take 3 days off work to go to court and explain our training regime..just stupid a waste of tax payer money to save face for a overly aggressive police posture.

The real concern is why would the cops approach with their guns drawn.
I understand your situation, but your comment about the dog is trained to latch and hold to me personally isn't a real argument. If a dog tried to latch and hold me I wouldn't understand due to fear and not being a dog trainer and would act irrationally b/c a dog in my mind is attacking me.
It's unfortunate that you have to deal with this. Sad for the dog that his life was taken and all he thought he was doing was protecting his owner.

So far the police are not talking but my buddy swears he had done nothing and didn't even see that the officers had approached with weapons at the ready until the dog uncoiled out the window. This happened in Tampa....was a hot night I'm sure my buddy had a big buzz but was not arrested for DUI

i know hindsight is 20/20, but he should have immediately rolled up his window when he got pulled over...not trying to be a person, but i feel i'm missing part of the story

The real comedy is that had it been an attack dog he would not have jumped out unless commanded, where as a guard seeing the weapon it becomes the perceived threat and the dog reacts on auto mode.

Its usually the people's fault when a dog gets into action, not sure my friend is totally blameless but my interest anyway is in defended the dogs actions not his owners.

Probably a good idea to immediatly secure your highly trained dog in the vehicle the instant a police car throws on the blue lights. The window rolled down sounds like a complete brain stall. That Doberman was probably barking it's head off and of course the police unholster their weapons from the word go. Who knows but I imagine if that window were rolled up and animal secured then we wouldn't be here. Cops will shoot it 10/10 times.

Exactly. Who in the hell would take a dog out in public with that kind of training? The animal sees a cop and goes ape shot with no stop command because he might focus in on that holster. Insane.

You're not going to get a fair trial and will just be wasting money. Cops in this country can do no wrong. They can basically do anything they want. If they think any danger is coming their way they can use lethal force and will never get in any trouble over it.

^ He's a licensed dog trainer with probably 20 years of experience. The police have no beef with the service he provides. I'm sure all they want is for him to give a statement verifying that the animal is trained to respond to brandished weapons, end of hassle. His buddy is the one who's up a creek either way for not securing the animal.

The weapon must be brandished and the dog alerts on the approaching threat and he wasn't in public with the dog it was in his own car, that's why the dog engaged. Dogs are taught to guard for many reasons personal and property. Most of our dogs you would never know where trained unless you tried to broach their guarded security. All guard dogs are taught to respond to voice command to halt but are not taught the command to attack the command is "guard" or "cover" when a dog is set to protect a property but will only engage when the boundary is broached or an active perceived threat of an advancing intruder or attacker. My neighbor has sheep he uses a trained guard, the dog will not advance on kids on the property but will on any other dogs or active threats. He will protect the family but from a distance with full attention if the kids in the yard start horse play and it gets rough and the dog is not sure he will alert and bark and whine and scamper about trying to get attention to his dismay not go full bore on attack.

Advance on a guard with a weapon in your hand and the dog sees red his reaction is stop hold protect to disarm not destroy. The dogs sense of purpose is different than an attack dog and so are their reactions when the threat retreats the dog stops and does what we call "back and bare" hind quarters go down into a crouch the dog bares it teeth growls and barks viciously but does not advance an attack dog will chase you to hell and won't stop till your toast or it is called off.
Guard dogs in certain rescue situations have been known to hold on so hard that they can be hoisted off the ground and won't let go no matter what.. where as an attack dog just continuously bites shakes and shreads
