Do you know openings?
Offenses and Defenses?
Studied this game at all?
Yes!
I haven't played a game in ten yrs.
Can we play online? Chess tourney?
The standard opening moves are basic defense, pawns. Guard queen. I always adjusted my game within five moves depending on attack.

I used to be decent. Mediocre in some circles. Pretty good in others. Trash in a few. Haven't played in many years. First learned the game in like 4th or 5th grade. Like a scene out of a movie.
"White teacher in more or less all black school is gonna teach these disadvantaged youth how to play chess...and maybe a little something about life at the same time."
He was a pretty decent dude. Had a buddy that would come on chess day and help out. Also a white dude. That's what race relations looked like in the 1990's, even under the strain of the racial turmoil of that era. They often look that way now as well but the media would never let you know it. Went off on a tangent and that's not what this thread is about.

I'm good enough to beat high 1300 ranked players - humans or computer personalities acting like 1300. Nothing to brag about really but the only reason I'm good enough to beat 98% of people out there is because they either don't play or they only know how the pieces move. Just because you know the rules of poker doesn’t make you a good poker player.

I don’t memorize openings but I almost always start White with a 3 move opening called “Torre Attack”. Most people like myself who don’t play serious tournaments aren’t going to benefit from memorizing openings because there’s too much to memorize and you might not use an opening you learned within the next 6 months or years and by then you forgot the openings and you don’t know the principles behind each move. It’s more important to know the reasons behind each opening move as opposed to just simply memorizing where the pieces go. You can also make some serious mistakes if you try to use openings you don’t really understand.
