Now that we are close to the 2018 NFL season gettig ready to start, the question I want to ask the people here at Covers is "How many actually handicap the games for YOURSELF as compared to just getting picks from others or buying them from a service"? Moving here to Las Vegas nineteen years ago was the BEST move I ever made because of the environment it placed me in and it allowed me to pursue my passion which sadly in life many people don't get that opportunity to do so
Now with the states getting into the mix I hope many of you out there take advantage of this opportunity and learn to handicap for yourself.
I followed this plan and if it's something you can do as well I wish you the BEST of luck.
Step One-Was looking online for websites that sold used books and purchased the books that correspond to the sport(s) I wanted to bet/did bet, yearly magazines are helpful too
Step Two-Stop betting and build that bankroll,! and during this time, the books I purchased were read cover to cover and sifted through with a fine tooth comb and believe me you'll make PLENTY of notes but it's all worth it in the end
Step Three-As you learn about systems or data used to obtain the teams you should bet (this was one of the BEST advantages of this whole process) also visit your local library or watch you tube videos on how to design spreadsheets in Excel. For those that don't know, this itself was a great benefit because I learned so much here
Lastly...When you do handicap for yourself, it's hard sometimes but NEVER allow yourself to be influenced/swayed by the opinions or picks of others. When checking covers for the game previews the strategy is simple...if we BOTH pick the same team I'll bet that team more than I normally would. If we pick different teams then I'll go with my pick but sometimes might cut my wager in half. I ALWAYS go with my pick regardless since it's MY money I am wagering.
Hopefully this helps someone. Good luck to ALL my Covers brothers this NFL season 2018.

I could add a million other tid-bits of information but it would do no good for most readers. They will live and learn, unfortunately, at a very high cost (as you, a seasoned capper, knows all too well).
To answer your question I always cap my own games. I never, EVER, pay for picks or services. That simply ADDS additional cost to your seasonal bottom line. And I always have a few different books to shop for the right price on EVERY wager. The magic profit number of 52.5% means you count every penny. Sounds corny, I know, but it makes the difference between winners and losers.
Also have family (cousins, aunts & uncles) in Vegas but they are not gamblers. They are smart enough to earn a living by providing services that gamblers require. Nothing fancy. Casino employees, cab drivers, you name it (sorry fellas no hooker stories).
My sports gambling interests are strictly recreational and absolutely not for any type of a reliable income. I get enough of that action in the stock market and many other investment ventures.
The only point I might disagree with you on is never being influenced by others. ANYBODY can get on a losing streak where you just cannot pick your own nose. When I find myself in that situation I will follow another capper (free capper on any of the forums) that is red hot.
GLTA and let the 2018 NFL season begin.

Good Thread Freddie.

Thanks Goose! One thing I left out and should have included is that people do not need to "chase" action which many tend to do as well. There is NOTHING wrong with sitting a game out, it's money saved for the next day. I wish you and yours all the best in the upcoming year ahead.
